Did you know that there is a direct link between animal abuse and human abuse? John J. Kelso of Toronto observed this in 1873 and formed the first Humane and Children's Aid Society in Ontario. Later, the Children's Aid Society became separate from the Humane Society because of the overwhelming job for one society. The first piece of legislation was passed in 1891; even the the government felt it was important but could not find funding for it.
Many criminals in our prisons today started out abusing animals. The Boston Strangler and Marc Lepine who killed 14 female engineering students in Montreal, had killed pigeons with a pellet gun as an adolescent. Acts like killing pigeons may be considered as adolescent pranks. They may represent early warnings of a potential for serious violent crime.
We wish to educate the public about this like, and reporting such incidences to us. Like the woman with three small children who let a puppy starve to death or the young boy that beat a baby skunk to death with a baseball bat. The parents when confronted with this complaint could not understand what all the fuss was about, after all "it was only a skunk!"
Young offenders are being introduced to Shelters and the work that the Humane Societies do throughout Canada and the United States, with hopes of educating them to be caring citizens. You can help these young people by donating for an education program.
