There are a few things you must consider before looking to buy a Burmese cat. They are not always easy to find. This is not usually a quick process. Many breeders have waiting lists and therefore you cannot expect to just go out and get one tomorrow. We are also often very picky about who we sell to. I raise my kittens as part of my family, and therefore I would not let them go with just anyone who happened to have cash any more than you would send your children off with strangers. Most breeders also have some rules that they expect their buyers to follow. My kittens are sold with a contract that includes the following basic rules:
I also do not let my kittens leave my home until they are between 12-16 weeks old. Some people have a problem with this. They want to have the little, bitty, fuzzy kitten. However, kittens need more socialization time with their siblings and mother. If they are taken away at 8 weeks they will not socialize well with other animals. They need that time and I intend to give it to them. Your kitten will still bond to you at that age and you will still get to see it in it's "kitten" stage. This also allows me to make sure they recieve their full round of kitten shots and dewormings before they leave my home. When you recieve your kitten he will only need a rabies shot, and then will be good for a year.
If you are already turned off by these statements, perhaps a Burmese is not the cat for you. There are hundreds of cats at local shelters that desperately need a home. Thre are few rules involved in owning one, and you will be doing them an enormous favor.
For those of you that can live with the rules out lined above, feel free to contact me by e-mail. I use that as the best first contact, but I will want to speak with you over the phone as well. If I do not have what you are looking for, I will be happy to pass your request along to a network of other Burmese breeders. I am located in Raleigh, NC, and I prefer to sell to people who can drive to me to pick up their kitten, but I am willing to ship them as well if necessary. The cost of shipping falls on the prospective owner.
Burmese can be addicting! Once you've had one, you're spoiled for life and will likely always want to have one! They are wonderful cats.
Good luck on your search!
