Saturn and the Draigon

Vunata Dragon

The draigon actually originated on Earth. The ancient dragon is actually not so ancient. The evolved draigon is a warm-blooded creature, but it does not require heat from the sun in order to live. This helped the dragon immensely when it migrated to Saturn and was forced to adapt. In early 1911, dragons were kept in a zoo. After humans had discovered the dragons, they knew that if they stayed on Earth, they would truly become extinct. About 10,000 dragons flew to Saturn for refuge, as it was the only uninhabited planet at the time. Of the 10,000 original dragons, only 4,000 survived. The dragon evolved into the draigon in a 30-year time span. For more information on the scientist that discovered the draigon's legendary ancestor, you can visit the D.R.A.G.O.N.S website. Most of the information regarding dragons on Earth is based on the information from this site.

On Earth, the lifecycle of dragons lasted about 1,200 years and involved 6 stages of growth. The draigon was the second stage, and therefore very small. The full grown dragon was known as a wyrm. The draigons are as large as the wyrm on Earth, even though they are named after the small versions of the Earth draigon.

The draigon is a species of dragon residing on Saturn. Because there is no landmass on Saturn, the draigon lives on floating islands it can create. The draigon gathers materials from the rings of Saturn. With its fire breath, it melts the rocks together to form the island. The gravity on Saturn is so little that the islands float naturally.

Physiology

The draigon cannot breathe. Nor does it have to. Since all the air on Saturn is noxious, the draigon adapted its breathing capabilities so it can change anything into breathable air. They absorb the air through their skin, since if the exhaled through their mouths, anything in front of them would be toast. Because of this ability, they are able to fly through space. The draigons of Saturn are peaceful with almost all planets.

The draigon eats pretty much what it can find. However, it must not feed off the planets of the Milky Way galaxy, in fear of jeopardizing its peace with the planets. It therefore goes to the nearby Andromeda galaxy to feed. If, for some reason, the Milky Way system becomes peaceful with the Andromeda galaxy, then the draigon will move its feeding ground. The draigons must worry about such things, because Vunata Dragon is a representative of the UOPS. The draigon, because of its Earthly roots, does not feed on humans. It didn't when it lived on Earth, because it did not like the taste of the human.

Mating

Before a draigon mates, the female must choose a male to mate with. The males must get the female's attention. To do this, they perform many different stunts in the air. Many will include their fire breath. The female will choose the most agile and daring of the males. For the male to prove this to the female, it also performs ground action. If the female rejects the male, she will make a singsong roar and leave.

Once the female chooses the mate, then the actually mating process begins. The draigon mates in the air. The mating process is known as dragon-slide: the two partners fly high in the sky and after a moment they grab each other and close their wing and make free-fall. Then at less than a hundred feet from the ground they open their wing and land. The dragons so unusual mating process is mainly because dragons love speed and risk, and add these to the pleasure of love... you have a sensation that human could never enjoy. * The fertilization process involves the male shooting sperm into the air after the female lays the egg. The sperm hits the egg, coats it, and permeates the outer shell to fertilize the egg.

Once this occurs, the female then catches the egg in her pouch. The female then severely mauls the male so it will never mate again. However, the male then changes its sex so it’s a female. The female does the same. This process goes on for 5 years. The draigon mates every 50 years, starting when they are 100.

Young Draigons

After the egg is in the dragons pouch and hatches, it goes through many growth stages. Once a baby draigon reaches age 25, it will test its flying abilities, and will make its first flight. The mother and father dragon will teach the dragons on how to take off from a cliff, how to use the thermals, and how to land. There is some natural instincts that the dragons have when first learning to fly, such as how often to flap the wings to stay in the air. The young draigons have always loved to fly, and will spend most their time in the air for about another 10 years.

The baby draigons are not as attached to their parents as humans are. They become solitary in their first 10 years. A draigon has a sort of coming of age at the age of 100. This century mark ensures that the draigon has time to learn how to fly effectively. If the draigon does not have flying abilities that are sufficient enough for the Supreme High Ordinance of Draigons (More Later!), they will exile the draigon. The shamed draigon then goes to live on one of Saturn's moons.

Society of the Draigon

The society of the draigon is mainly matriarchical, but is mostly solitary. This only means that they travel and hunt alone. Though there is an abundant amount of food in the universe, the draigon is very competitive when it eats. Also, the routes it travels are traversed alone. No other draigon may travel these routes. The draigon population will meet every 10 years to discuss business. The draigon government includes 2 houses, the Griffin and the Fairy house. There are 10 seats of leadership in each house. The females, and the Griffin house by the males dominate the Fairy house.

The Fairy House and the Griffin house meet all together every 5 years. The 10 seats of leadership in the Fairy house are filled with female draigons. The top 5 seats are reserved for the most wealthy and powerful families. The most powerful family is in the Fairy Chair, which resides over the whole house. The Dragon family is directly under the Fairy Chair position. Minor, but still important families hold the 4 seats below the Fairy Chair. The 5 lower chairs hold wealthy, but not powerful families. Should anything occur to the family in the Fairy Chair, the Dragon family will take over. The next of kin below the mother draigon always takes the chair after the mother dies. The first born, male or female, will take the mothers place.

The Griffin house is set up in the same way, though with males. One family may occupy both houses, as long as the father is in the Griffin, and the mother is in the Fairy. The first-born will always go to the Fairy house if a family occupies both.

Above both the Griffin House and the Fairy house is the Supreme High Council of Draigons, or SHCD. SHCD determines the fate of young draigons who are not capable of being a good enough draigon. SHOD determines many things that the Fairy and Griffin houses cannot decide upon. They are replaced every 100 years by a new, younger draigon. The draigons chosen must be wise and knowledgeable. There are 34 draigons on SHCD, one for each thousand years a draigon lives. However, no one knows which draigon is chosen. The SHCD has never been seen.

Magical Abilities

The draigon's magical abilities is very limitied, but are very powerful when needed. A draigon can use all of its energy and do interplanetary transportation. The ambassadors that go to different planets do not use this ability, but are chosen for their magical abilities. A draigon, to be chosen for ambassadorship, has to have exceptionally powerful magical abilites. The draigon must display endurance in holding a magical spell. The draigon must live in the shell, and keep it magically enhanced so they fit in it and don't make it crack or stretch. And, because they have to make periodic trips to Saturn to report back, they have to be able to conceal themselves long enough so they aren't spotted. Vunata Nivek has the most problems. She holds ambassadorship on Earth, and also holds the Fairy Chair. She is forced to make periodic trips very often back to Saturn. She was not asked to drop her ambassadorship because of her superb magical abilities.

Because they change sex so many times during mating, the male in the Griffin house may be forced to move into the Fairy house because it is now a female. The Dragon family holds the Griffin Chair in the Griffin house, because the family in the Fairy chair only occupies the Fairy House. As soon as the draigon baby leaves the pouch (1 year old), it must learn how it must act in society. Because a male is considered a lower class, it does not learn as much as the female. Both males and females know the customs of each, as they may very well become one after their first mating period. The male’s social patterns are based on strength.

A draigon can sense when other draigons are around. When they close their eyes, a pale lavander light will appear when a draigon is near. They are able to sense other draigons who are even in guises that are very much different than theirs. They do not always let on that they know, for sometimes it can be very devastating to find out your lover is a draigon.

Skills

A male must have good flying skills. To be accepted as a member of society, the male must show their agility in both the air and the ground. IF they don't, they are shunt from society. If the baby's family is high standing in society, the draigon must not do anything to jeopardize that family's reputation.

A female draigon must be proper, but not in the way humans view proper. Unlike proper human females, a draigon female must possess both a fiery attitude and breath. The draigons in politics thrive on petty bickering. The female must learn the political society inside out before she is admitted into the family. The female's reputation in society is based on grace, but also attitude. Their flying skills must also show talent in the air and on the ground.

Life Span

A draigon lives from about 30,000 to 34,000 years. This is in a Saturn year. On earth, they would only live 10,000 years.

Vunata Dragon

If you wish to have a more updated history of Vuna's life, go to her dead journal. It has a much more detailed history of her life from after she joined the UOPS.

After joining the UOPS, Vuna was appointed the Fairy Chair Holder of Saturn. It was the first time in all Saturnal Draigon history that a family has occupied to chairs of one house. Vuna wasn't representing her own family, however. She married into the Nivek family, making her a part of their family as well as her own. When Herotia Nivek, the previous holder of the Fairy Chairl, died unexpectedly, it was decided that Vuna should take her place. Unfortunately, Vuna came to have the Chair at an inopportune time. The draigons were just beginning to go to war with the gnomes of Uranus, and she was responsible for directing troops and leading the war against Uranus. It was a stressfull time for her. She made attempts to keep those close to her off of Uranus so they wouldn't be killed. Jonathon, her husband, begged her to allow him to go. After quite a lot of begging, Vuna let him go. She regretted that decision for the rest of her life, as he was killed and eaten by the gnomes.

After Jonathon's death, Vuna gave up the Fairy Chair. She gave it to her brother, Mayanaio Dragon, in hopes that he would finish the war between the planets.
