My father
MIRO
The name "Vermiro" (pronounced "where-meero") comes from my name "Vera" and my Father's name "Miro". It is actually the shortening of his second given name "Radomir". He came from Prague (Czech Republic)
I was about 3 yr old when he died of Angina. At that time the medication to control it was not yet available in Europe.
Although I have no conscious first hand memories of him, I feel very close to my father.

Hello, my name is Vera Libuse Hazelgrove.
I was born in Bucharest, Romania (Dad worked there at the time) 1944. After my father died, my Mum returned to her parents in Austria.
We lived in Vienna, where I eventually studied 4 years full time at the College for Art and Textile Design. I gained experience, studying textile design at a textile printing factory, working at rug designs and rug weaving for a Viennese company, and working 6 months at the "Hofburg Gobelin Manufactur" (The former Emperor's Tapestry Workshop in Vienna). After that I got married and worked as commercial artist for a Department Store in Vienna.
I immigrated to Australia 1967.
My first marriage ended in divorce after 11 years. My second marriage was to David and we were together for 27 years. David died Nov 2003.

I wove my own very first tapestry 1975 and started weaving again 1982 (all those are in the Gallery). Since 1986 I participated in exhibitions, had an exhibition of my own in Adelaide, got 2 nominations and acceptances (in separate years) for the BHP Award for Excellence. I held workshops at the Hand weavers and Spinners Guild in Adelaide and in Yorketown for the Lutheran Women. I spend 12 months at the old Jam Factory where I also held classes. Since then I teach privately.
1989 we moved out of Adelaide to the country, where I got involved with local craft fairs, had a spinning group of 11 once a week in my studio and was teaching. Then David had several operations and I needed to take special care of him and took a 5 year break from weaving tapestries. I also got carried away, tending a flock of angora-mohair goats, establishing a flower and vegy garden and planting over 70 trees on our mini-farm.
I re-started weaving tapestries about 8 years ago. In 2000 we needed to move back to Adelaide to have David close to the QEHospital, as his condition worsened and I could not do home dialysis for him any longer. I have my own studio in the garden of my home in Adelaide now.

Actually, I am vision-impaired (legally blind) since an accident when I was young. I have a very small amount of tunnel vision left.
My remaining vision is not blurred or shadowy, but normal to my age. It's a little like seeing the world in the radius of a mini pencil torch. By scanning I can get more information.
When we had to move back to Adelaide, things got rather intense. After living in the country for so long, I found it very difficult to cope. Now that I am in the "older" bracket :-) my reactions are not fast enough any more and my "scans" are also not always accurate anymore.

I did mobility training with the Royal Institute for the Blind in Adelaide and applied for a dog to SEDA - "Seeing Eye Dogs of Australia". When a dog became available, I went to Melbourne to train with a Seeing Eye Dog and graduated May 9, 2002. I came home with Karley and she is taking good care of me ever since!

My heartfelt Thanks to everyone contributing to this amazing change in my life!! Click here to see Karley's Page
