Ephraim and Nancy's great-granddaughter Eldean Kreitzer sent a photocopy of a marriage record that seems to have come from a family Bible, and it reads as follows:

"This Certifies That Nancy Jane Stemen and Ephraim Hilyard were solemnly united by me in the Holy Bonds of Matrimony at Gomer on the 10th day of January in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy-five conformably to the Ordinace of God and the laws of the State In Presence of Christian Stalter Nicholas' Family.

Signed
Jas. Nicholas
(Per.? A. H.)"

Eldean also recalls visiting with her Uncle Frank (Benjamin Franklin Hilyard) and Aunt Lottie (Charlotte Moorman Hilyard):

"We used to go see them at least once a year at their house [in Elida]. I think our reunion was there for awhile. We didn't thinkFrank and Lottie Hilyard anything of using their outhouse, because we had one at home. My mom took our drinking water from home because the sulfa water made my youngest sister sick and we didn't like the smell or taste either. Click on image to see enlargement.

"I remember staying at their house overnight once. We girls (there were four of us) slept in the upstairs bedroom in a bed that had a mattress filled with straw and we had fun because it made noise every time we moved. Our blanket was a thick comforter. I also remember enjoying the sound of a train that passed nearby during the night.

Andy and Anna Hilyard"My very favorite uncle was Uncle Andy (Andrew Isaiah Hilyard). He was a school teacher and I loved to listen to his voice. I am blessed in that my granddaughter who is a Philipino-American sometimes sounds like him. Grandma Bowersock would tell us how Uncle Andy weighted 14 pounds at birth and ended up the runt of the family. We spent a lot of time with Uncle Andy and Aunt Anna. You just knew these two people loved each other." Click on photo to see enlargement.
