Rev William Waterfield(24 Mar 1795-1868) formerly pastor at the Independent Church, Wrexham in North Wales, arrived in Melbourne in May 1838. On 27 May 1838 he preached in the small Church of England building in William Street and described the building as a mere wooden shell incapable of keeping out the cold.
See Aust Dictionary of Biography in December 1837 he sailed from England in the Aberdeenshire, and reached Hobart in the following April and Melbourne in the Adelaide a month later.
Rev Waterfield Congregational minister, in December 1839 Henry Hopkins set the foundation stone of a brick church, Melbourne's first permanent place of worship.
He employed for 5 months Christina Stewart who arrived 27 October 1839 and then wed James Smith (1796-1860), a minister's son who had emigrated from Scotland in 1840 and was teaching at a day school in Collins Street Congregational Church vestry

He resigned in 1843 and spent his last years in Van Dieman's Land where he died on 17 May 1868. He was buried in the Green Ponds cemetery. He was survived by his daughters; his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Liddell Purvis of Berwick upon Tweed, whom he had married in June 1842, had died at Green Ponds, Tasmania, in April 1865, aged 48.

Jonathan Binns Were had 9000 pounds to invest, may have chartered the ship William Metcalfe, in which he sailed with his wife, infant son Jonathan Henry, 4 yr old daughter Sophia Louisa, his brother-in-law Robert Stevenson Dunsford and two servants. It is certain the bulk of the cargo was his - included a house ready for erection, a number of tents, and at Oporto he purchased port wine in gallon glass decanters engraved with the name J B Were. On arrival he purchased a site on the south western corner of Collins and Spring Sts at 3 pounds 10 shillings an acre, and erected his house - on the outskirts of the settlement.
