On Tuesday 31 August the Paul Pry left the Heads at George Town and about 3pm on Friday Cape Schank bore north-east six miles. A sudden squall, like a whirlwind, laid the vessel on her beam ends. The cabin passengers were at dinner, and rushed upon deck. A passenger named Wait drowned, the other 13 took to the 13 ft rowboat, and made it to shore at 6pm where they proceeded to the station of Mr Barker. The party returned the same evening about 7pm, without having heard any tidings of them. The Hobart Courier 21 May records the eventual finding of Cooper who reached a hut containing kindly people, but Huggins was too weak to continue with him, so is mourned by Mr Laurie and Mr Webb who
