Personal History: A rare genetic condition left Grace blind at the age of eight. Determined study kept her up with her school work as she learned Braille and she quickly learned to live with her blindness. She was raped at the age of fifteen and, because she was not able to identify her attacker, he was never found. As a result, she and her family searched harder for a procedure to restore her sight. The search was successful and Grace regained her sight. She graduated high school on time and entered the UVic English program with the goal of eventually becoming a special education teacher for the blind.
