Hibiscus Coast Motorsport Club held their first Motorkhana for the year on
January 18 at Bayers Farm, north of Silverdale, Auckland NZ. Despite it
being soon after the holidays, HCMC members turned out in force to compete
with a total of 21 entries received for the 6 test day.

Competition was close all day between reigning club champion Justin Glavish
in his Suzuki Swift GTi, Dale Crossley in a Toyota Starlet and the father
and son pair Steve and Chris Subritzky in a Honda Civic. Crossley set the
early pace in the cloverleaf test, using the LSD of the Starlet to hold the
car in perfect powerslides around the whole course. However, it was the
nimbleness of Glavish's Swift and the Subritzky's Civic which told on the
subsequent tighter tests, each taking a test win.

Two junior drivers entered for the day, with Nicola Ives finishing with the
upper had over Cheree Stubbs after the latter's Datsun 1200 melted a coil
after the 4th test. Ladies honours were taken by Gillian Ives in a tidy
drive in her Corolla.

Incidents aplenty happened during the day, with the notable one being Steve
Subritzky and Gary Trayes (driving a Mk 1 Escort) seeing who could lift the
inside wheels highest (Trayes won that competition, getting both left
wheels 3 feet into the air). Escort driver Stephen Porter seized the engine
in his car, and Jeff Harlick (driving a Starlet) drove slowly off the
course straight after starting. Faces were puzzled as the car was okay -
his watch strap had come undone and slip down over his hand which was
resting on the gear-lever, instantly incapacitating him.

The battle for overall honours raged all day, with the Glavish just holding
off Crossley after the latter incurred a time penalty for incorrectly
entering a garage. Steve Subritzky held off son Chris by less than one
second for third, Colin Jones driving a Corolla finished fifth. In the end,
the top eight were separated by less than eight seconds.

In classes, Glavish won the 1001-1300cc class, Crossley the 1301-1600cc
class, John Riddell (in an Alfa 33) the 1601-2000cc class and Chris
Subritzky (driving a second car, a Commodore) the Over 2000cc class.

These results mean that in the club Motorkhana Championship, Glavish (29
points) has pulled clear of Chris Subritzky (26 points) with Crossley,
Trayes and Jones equal third on 18 points each.
