titans history
The Victoria Titans formed two years ago, in 1998, just in time to be part of the first NBL Summer Season. With five of the last eight NBL Championships being won by teams in Melbourne, it is undoubtedly the basketball capital of Australia. The Victoria Titans where formed when the South East Melbourne Magic merged with the North Melbourne Giants.
The North Melbourne Giants (formerly Coburg Giants) where formed in 1977 and they joined the NBL in 1980. Winning the championships in 89 and 94 the Giants became one of the leagues most consistently successful teams. In 19 seasons in the NBL, they played in the finals 14 times, in the grand final 4 and won the championship twice. The Giants changed from Coburg to North Melbourne when they moved to the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Centre, so they could represent a much larger geographical base.
On the other side of the city, the South East Melbourne Magic where formed on the 17th January 1992, when the Southern Melbourne Saints and the Eastside Spectres merged. The Magic named Melbourne Park (Rod Laver Arena) as there home ground and went on to win the championship in their first year, after remaining unbeaten at home for their whole first season. Since there formation in 92, the Magic made it to the semi finals seven times straight, and in their last season they set the record for 26 wins and only 4 losses in a season.
