ECONOMIC PROGRESS AND PEACE
December 14, 2000
At Christmas, "peace on earth" has been the longing for thousands of years. Though we pray to God, exalting His glories and mercy, we have not yet been granted this blessing by the creator.
During the past century, history saw the unprecendented economic growth of mankind. Nevertheless, the gap between the HAVES & the HAVE NOT'S has become even wider, resulting in more conflicts.
There are certain trends, very interesting ones, that have been noted by PRO. We have been talking of the intrusion of developed countries' capital, particularly USA, into developing countries; equally PRO has noted during the last 12 months that European capital has taken over 1,000 American companies, while many developing countries' capital has bought USA and European corporations. In addition to all that, the "brains" of developing countries have also established their new enterprises both in the old and new continents. It seems that the era of geocities or earth villlage will gradually become true.
This sort of mutual or interwoven ownership of enterprises/economic interests seems to be a megatrend. As a result, PRO believes that the chances of peace has entered a higher degree of possibility. For instance, because of one billion US$ investment in PRC US government stopped short of sanction against PRC immediately after the June 4 Tien An Men massacre; Taiwan was not so vociferous criticizing PRC in the tragedy of their brothers and sisters; instead, their investment speed into PRC's economy was then accelerated. Today, she is the second largest investor in the mainland of China. Therefore, we may say Taiwan, in any case, won't be a belligerent against PRC. That is why PRO management has repeatedly advised Taiwan's upper levels, through his personal relationship with them, to "encourage PRC's influx of capital to Taiwan. Unfortunately, their PRC phobia and possibly other ulterior motives, caused this advice not to be accepted. If and when there are 20 billion US$ PRC capital in Taiwan, it will be unimaginable that PRC will take any inimical actions against Taiwan. My theory was confirmed even on the mainland side : when there was rumour foreboding a Chinese attack Taiwan, those coastal cities, where there are numerous Taiwan factories, voiced their objections to such a possibility.
I can also forsee a similar situation between two Koreas. When mutual economic interests built, nobody would dare to "cut off his nose to spite his face".
As this is the time to say prayers, let all of us beseech God "Peace on earth and prosperity to man" . Amen.
