Head Hunting or Struggle For Job

May 6, 2001

In our article in August 1999, "Dragon, Eagle, and Elephant', we mentioned about India's advantage in the software industry. According to latest report of Mckensey & Co, on the International Science Technology Conference in Bombay (India), the PRC government and tech industries have earmarked billions of US$ funds for 9 universities as a foundation for developing research or acquiring up-to-date equipment. Therefore, PRC, the dragon, has been gradually catching up India, the elephant.

On the other hand, the number of Chinese university or college graduates seems to have, in certain regions, saturated the employment market.

The latest headhunting expos have taken place in Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Kwongzhow, and Shentsen. In Xian, a hub city for the development of the "backward western region", job openings have been filled completely by applicants. However, in many other places, particularly in Kwongzhow, there is a serious trend of underemployment. Tien Ho district of the said city was looking for 50 university graduates to work in their 20 villages. On the first day, there were 3500 applicants, including 80 Ph.D's and masters-level. The most interesting story was a funeral parlour, which invited application for 40 persons, who possessed some know-how about automation or computers. They thought it would be difficult to recruit such workers for this traditionally despised job. To their surprise, more than 1,000 applicants including graduates from a number of top universities were willing to work there.

What do the above stories tell us? Either university graduates have innundated the prevailing job market or most job applicants would like to work in coastal or big cities.

For foreign investors who wish to recruit the right talent or to "headhunt" for qualified persons, we have very relevant information or the right channelto help you shorten the search.
