My Book Corner

"There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates' loot on Treasure Island...and best of all, you can enjoy these riches every day of your life."
(Walt Disney)

Books are an amazing entity. They are such a shaping experience, and when I think back to some of the ideas which have shaped my life, a large number of them have come from books.

I didn't always love books. I could read from a very early age, but I didn't have any kind of thirst for it until I was about eight. In third grade my class participated in a readathon, and what began I think as more of a competitive spirit, turned into a genuine interest which is with me now. When I went to university there were many interesting subjects, but I loved the idea of being able to sit around and talk about books. (Trust me when I say that was a slightly romanticized view of majoring in english.) As it turned out, it wasn't quite as simple as that, but I did get to read a lot of great books, hopefully I'll be able to share some of that with other book lovers reading this page.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS AND AUTHORS

Since my own reading pleasure began at such an early age, some of my favourite children's books and authors seem like a natural place to start. This is not going to be a page about "Baby Sitter's Club" or the "Sweet Valley Books." or even any other of today's popular series,(though I can't resist a couple of series from my own childhood) This is about old and new classics, and books which made such an impact they still sit on my shelves today.

I think I'll begin with an old favourite: The Chronicles of Narnia.....

As I've stated many times, there were so many different books that I read as a kid that I could easily fill up several pages worth, but before I get to my favourite few, there are a couple of other series worth mentioning. One of those is The Bobbsey Twins, and the other is Trixie Belden

The Bobbsey Twins books actually date back even before my Grandparents' childhoods, and over the years multiple revisions and versions of these books have been published. I actually inherited the bulk of the books from my Mother, but I probably collected a few of the newer ones as well. Created by Edward Stratemeyer, (as I've only recently learned) the books followed the antics of the Bobbsey Family, which had two sets of twins. The site I've linked to can actually provide a better history than I can, but I definetly developed an interest in twins from reading those books. I have no idea how difficult it would be to pick one up at your local bookstore now, but as I've discovered, there are lot's of places on the web to find them.

Trixie Belden also dates back a number of years. The first one was published in 1948, but unlike the Bobbsey Twins, ghost writers continued with the series until the mid 80's. Trixie was along the same lines as Nancy Drew, but she appealed to a slightly younger audience. If you can still find them, these books are great for a young sleuth.

If you follow along to my next page, (which is in progress) you'll get to the my feature titles. If you're looking for more adult fare, you'll find that eventually, but I haven't had time to do it yet. Otherwise return to my main page to find other points of interest on this site.
