VIENNA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
The VPO, Austria's most highly coveted "cultural ambassador" was
"born" under the baton of Otto Nicolai (1810 - 1849), then conductor
at the Kärntertortheater, on March 28, 1842 when he conducted a "grand
concert" in the Großer Redoutensaal which was organized by "all
the members of the orchestra of the k.k. (imperial-royal) Hof-Operntheater".
Under Hans Richter, the legendary conductor of the premiere of Wagner's
tetralogy "The Ring of the Nibelungen" in Bayreuth, the orchestra
finally established itself as an ensemble of world renown and incomparable
tradition. Especially important for the history of the orchestra after 1945
is its work with the two honorary conductors Karl Böhm and Herbert
von Karajan and with the honorary member Leonard Bernstein. Although the
orchestra has moved with the times it remains faithful to traditional principles:
it retains its self-determination and the subscription concerts as the artistic,
organizational and financial basis of its work.
WIENER SYMPHONIKER
Founded almost one hundred years ago by Ferdinand Löwe, and originally
called "Concert-Verein" the orchestra's impressive record
lists about two hundred concerts per year, some of them organized by the
Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft and the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde.
Leading conductors who have performed with this orchestra include Bruno
Walter, Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan,
Wolfgang Sawallisch, Leonard Bernstein, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Claudio
Abbado and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. In 1997, Wladimir Fedosejew has
become chief conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker.
