William Primrose

(William Primrose Washing His Car - An MG)

Born, Glasgow, 23 Aug., 1904

Died,

William Primrose is arguably the most well-know violist of all time. Like many others, he started his musical career playing the violin, and the "easy style" he had "arrested attention." He studied at the G.S.M. in London and also in Belgium with Eugene Ysa˙e.

Travelling and performing extensivly, he settled in the United States and played in Toscanini's hand-selected Orchestra of the American Broadcasting Company. He also was a soloist with London Symphony, the the London Philharmonic, and the Toronto Symphony. A close friend of Bela Bartók, Primrose debuted the viola concerto Bartók had written for him, in 1950, after the composer's death.
