My mother was separated from her parents during the Second World War. She and her sister found refuge in England. At the time of this photo (below) they were living in Manchester (ca. 1946).
After the War, with the help of the Red Cross, my mother was reunited with her mother in England. My grandmother had survived the Nazi concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. She weighed just 90 pounds at the time of Liberation. Here is my grandmother a few years after the War:
My grandmother and mother decided to emigrate to the United States in 1947. They settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where they were sponsored by cousins. Meanwhile, by 1920 my father's family had also emigrated to the United States to join cousins in Pittsburgh. My father Carl was born in Pittsburgh in 1924. My parents met in 1948. My parents moved to Florida in 1981. They still travel and enjoy life. As you can see, they love the water. Here is a recent photo of them on a cruise:
