Renaissance & Baroque

Brass ensembles in various forms have been a staple of the music world for 500 years. Although the quality of the instruments has changed drastically, and new instruments have been developed even in the last 150 years, one thing has remained constant... the use of these ensembles for celebrations, both sacred and secular.

Giovanni and Andrea Gabrielli were among the first composers to really utilize the flexibility of brass instruments. From Brass Trios through Quartets, Quintets, Brass Choirs, and even Double Choirs, there is joy when the brass is sounded. I am a member of The Roscoe Brass , a quintet based in Coshocton, Ohio. Let's look at some of the literature available to modern Brass Quintets.

The abundance of good music that is available today is due in large part to the popularity of groups such as the Canadian Brass, the Empire Brass, and the Roscoe Brass (just kidding!).

Click on a musical style to look at some of the publications available for quintet. Note that this list is not comprehensive or based on any type of grading scale... it is simply representative of the Roscoe Brass repetoire.
