Return of Owners of Land Prior to great family estates being broke up in the late 19th century under the Land Acts and by the Encumbered Estates Court, a list of land owners was compiled from 1871 to 1876 by Government order and printed in "Return of Owners of Land of One Acre and Upwards, in the Several Counties, Counties of Cities, and Counties of Towns in Ireland, to which is added A Summary For Each Province and for All of Ireland (Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of Her Majesty). In 1988, the Genealogical Publishing Company in Baltimore, MD published the book. My local library purchased the book, which I browsed through to find three entries for owners named Claffey. An owner was considered to be anyone who held title to the property outright or held a lease of more than 99 years or a lease of perpetual renewal.
