So Just What is Contra Dance, Anyway?
The name contra dance is kind of a misnomer. People tend to get a picture of dancers doing the "Achy-Breaky" in cowboy boots, and want no part of it. Let me assure those folks,
Contra Dancing does not mean "bootscootin'!" It also has NOTHING to do with Nicaragua or getting too close to Patrick Swayze (darn).
So what is it?
Contra Dancing is a traditional form of dancing similar to square dancing, but minus the petticoats, and much easier.
Contra is associated with New England, but it's danced all over the world. The United States has seen a revival in recent years, perhaps because it brings back a time when
men and women could dance together freely and enjoy themselves. For those of us who secretly relished the awkward proceedings in 7th grade gym class, this kind of activity is heaven. Plus, the boys are taller. :)
Men and women stand across from each other in long lines (hence the name, "contra" or "opposite"), square off in sets of four, and the dance begins! Rent Emma or Sense and Sensibility, go to the Shepherd of the Hills play in Branson, MO, or come to one of our dances, and you'll see!
