Scott Atkins - Percussion Caption head/Arranger


Scott’s drum corps involvement began in 1986, when he joined the Lampliters Drum Corps in his home town of Smith’s Falls, Ontario. After moving through the ranks of a progressive cadet program, he earned a spot playing snare with the corps. After competing in the junior scenes of ODCA, and DCNY, the corps took a year to march in the senior class of ICA in 1998, but returned to compete junior in 1989, winning the Canadian Nationals in the A-60 Division.

After the 1990 season, Scott began traveling to Kitchener, Ontario to try out for the Kiwanis Kavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps snare line. He bagan writing charts for the Lampliters Royal Brigade Corps for the 1991 season. After marching 1991 & 1992 on snare with the Kavaliers, Scott returned to school at The Audio Recording Academy in Ottawa. He studied with Phil Bova, T. Bruce Wittet, Eric Hasner, Steve Tevlin, and clocked many hours of studio time with various local bands and musicians.

Scott graduated from T.A.R.A. in the summer of 1993, while writing music and teaching the Empire Loyalist Drum & Bugle Corps in Amherstview, Ontario. Scott was also involved with the Contemporary Youth Ensemble in Vanier, Ontario, as well as the Kavalier Cadet School of Music. He moved to Kitchener, Ontario in December of 1993, to age out in the 1994 season with the Kavaliers. Scott continued to write music for Empire Loyalist for the 1994 & 1995 seasons, while also teaching at music camps in Sudbury, Ontario with the Blue Saints Drum Corps. In 1996, Scott was brought on board with the teaching staff of the Kingston Grenadiers Drum and Bugle Corps.

Scott accepted the Percussion Caption Head/Arranger position with the Grenadiers in the fall of 1997. In 1998 Scott found himself marching once again in the senior competitive circuit of DCA , which marked the corps first time as a finalist in it’s history. Scott also went on to take on a job managing a band instrument retail business in Waterloo, Ontario.

In February 2001, he recorded and released a CD with local musicians entitled “POMOJA: The Undiscovered”. Scott has been the Percussion Caption Head/Arranger for the Kingston Grenadiers every year since 1998, and in July 2001, moved to Montreal, Quebec to accept a position as product manager for Canada’s largest musical instrument and accessory distributor. Although maintaining a busy travel schedule with his new position, Scott maintains the position of Battery Arranger and Caption Head with the Grenadiers, and has brought some great educators into the program on staff in the last couple of years to help him achieve the goals of the Grenadiers Drumline.
