Mr. Lederman’s Letter

Hello once again. During the past month I have had the fortune of being able to work with all of your children. It has been fun, and a little work, getting to know all of them. Currently we have many irons in the fire. Our marching band pre- festival event at Harper Woods went well, there is the MSBOA Festival on October 6 at Marysville, we just finished up our Entertainment Book fundraiser sale, we’re beginning the pizza sale, we have three more home football games, and we’re finalizing the trip to the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Try saying that in one breath.

With all these activities going on it would be great to see many of the parents that I have not yet met at the next Band Booster meeting, which is on Tuesday, October 13, at 7 P.M. in the band room.

S.H.H.S. Band Web Site a Real Hit

by Amy Franzen

The Sterling Heights High School Bands have their own web site. You can visit there to see what’s going on with the band. Check for up coming events, view band pictures, and see the e-mail addresses of band members. You will also be able to see this newsletter on the web site.

Also, we are looking for lots and lots of pictures for the band web site. They can be of band events, band members having fun, or anything related to band. Please turn them in to Amy Franzen or Mr. Lederman - we’ll return them to you (make sure to put your name on them) as soon as we have scanned them. If you have a scanner, scan your pictures, save them in .jpg or .gif formats, then send them to me, Amy Franzen, at TShanik@aol.com.

If you have an e-mail address that you would like added to the web site, please submit it to me at the address above or give to Mr. Lederman, or to Mr. Stephenson. Remember, submit your pictures soon, and then look for them on our web site.

P.S.--Since you're already here and reading this, you can go ahead and disregard the comments about the address and reading the newsletter. --ed. :-)

The Colorguard Corner

New Uniforms Highlight Entertaining Program

The Colorguard not only is doing a fine job this year, but they also look great in their sharp, crisp new outfits. Their hard work at band camp and the weekly sectionals is beginning to pay off. We hope to have a fantastic season and plan to make many eyes turn at festival. Special thanks to Pat Swartz, our Colorguard Mom for all of her help with equipment and costumes.

Winter Guard Announcement

Early in October, look for a posting for the Winter Guard fall kickoff meeting. This year, Renaissance Winter Guard is planning a new invigorating show. We will need dedicated student participants and supporting parents. Being a band member is not a prerequisite, so, bring a friend and join us. If you don’t know much about the Winter Guard, see one of our Marching Band Colorguard members, they’ll fill you in!

From the Prez's (white?) House

I would like to thank all the band members who sold Entertainment Books during our recent fundraiser. Without your assistance, we would not have the funds to provide the many benefits a band of Stallion Quality deserves.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank John Straccia for his assistance in preparing the necessary forms for our non-profit status with the IRS.

Remember to inform your relatives, neighbors and friends to watch for the Stallion Marching Band on national television on Thanksgiving Day. Don’t miss the excitement as we march down Woodward Avenue in the traditional holiday event.

I would again like to set forth the invitation to all parents to attend our monthly Band Booster Meetings. They are held on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 P.M. in the band room. This is your chance to get information first hand on what is happening. You will no longer have to rummage through car trunks, bedroom floors, or school bags to find the odd flyer that never managed to reach the fridge magnet. That’s a difficult way to find out what’s going on with the band at any given time.

Call a fellow band parent and come join us! I will promise not to assign you to any committees at your first meeting.

The Drum Majors’Podium

By David Burkett & Meghan Thueme

Tweet, Tweet, Tweet . . . . . and Birdland echoes across the football field. The people in the stands roar with applause but might not realize all the hard work it takes for the performance to come together. Every Tuesday and Wednesday the marching band puts in two hours of intense practice.

Music is rehearsed and formations are perfected as a group of individual musicians unite and become a band. All of this hard work and devotion goes toward making every performance count. With our up coming football games, festival, and Thanksgiving Day Parade, our goal is to Always Remember . . . . "Eyes With Pride"!

Dear Band Boosters,

I want to thank your for giving me the opportunity to attend the George N. Parks Drum Major Academy at Illinois State University this summer. I cannot express in words how beneficial the experience was for me to work with such an amazing staff. I learned the skills and characteristics required in becoming the best Drum Major I can be as well as lessons I can take around the U.S.A. with as much enthusiasm, devotion, dedication, and pride as I possessed was incredible and made each day very exciting.

Thank you again for giving me the privilege of attending the George N. Parks Drum Major Academy. You have given me memories that I will hold very close to me heart.

Sincerely,
Meghan Thueme, Drum Major 1998-

Communicate With Your Fans . . . a fanout message

by Mary Mathews

A note of thanks to all the parents that have volunteered to help with this year’s telephone fanout.

Many times our fanout becomes the link for information to remind students and parents of upcoming events and requirements for our band. Therefore, it is very important to review the guidelines sent along with your student name list so we can look forward to a successful year. I will be contacting a few more parents for help with the concert and symphonic bands’ lists in the very near future.

Please contact me with any questions, updates or changes you may have. Again, thank you for your help and your support.

Fund Raising Fun by Dorothy Czarnecki

Fund Raising Activities off to a great start

Thanks to all who participated in the Entertainment Book Fundraising Event. Your enthusiasm and commitment to the bands is greatly appreciated. To all of the parents and all of the students who worked hard at selling books, we thank you for your creativity and tenacity. To Mrs. Swartz, Mrs. Borden, Mrs. Stephenson, and Mrs. Hoard, who came to school and helped distribute and collect the books, we thank you.

As of this writing, we do not have the final numbers on how many we sold, and the profits realized. When the final tally is completed, we will advise the students during their classes. Additionally, there will be a full report at the next band boosters meeting which we hope brings in more parents to hear about our successful kickoff to the fundraising year.

Beginning, October 6 we will start the Little Caesars Pizza Sale with delivery scheduled for November 3. The prices are the same as last year, and we will give the students the order forms during their classes on October 6.

SHHS Band Boosters has been asked to hold the Bake Sale at the Craft Show, which takes place on October 17. This is an event which has the potential for considerable returns into the booster’s account.

Judy Rocco has graciously agreed to chair this event. In the fashion we have become accustomed, she has received assistance from some of our moms who have worked this event before. Thanks to Debbie Hande and Donna Wilgus who were forthcoming with their experience and know-how! We would like to see every student in the bands and flag corps bring in a couple of items to be sold during the Craft Sale. Believe me, the goodies go quickly. It is rumored that we have some very fine bakers and candy makers in the ranks of our band and flag students. We look to their contributions as well!

Many parents and students have asked if we will sell candy again this year, and the answer is yes. It is currently planned for January.

? Kohl’s Works for Band Boosters

We have signed up to work at Kohl’s Lakeside, the weekend of October 24 and 25. We need volunteers to work 128 man hours. You must be 18 years old. The hours are Saturday 8 A.M. to 10 P.M., Sunday 10 A.M. to 8 P.M. You will receive the employee discount for that day only. You may purchase with cash or charge. If you do not have a Kohl’s charge, you may open one and get their additional discount. The hourly rate is $6.00: $4.00 will go into the student’s account, and $2.00 into the booster funds.

If you are interested in this fun method to earn booster funds please call Ann Stephenson, or Dorothy Czarnecki.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

If your student has not returned their Entertainment book, please have them do so as soon as possible. We need to close out the sale.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please call Dorothy Czarnecki.

Please remember the funds you raise help all of the band and flag members. We help pay for buses to and from events, and for apples at the games. We pay for the music, which is played during the marching band festival - over $1300.00 this year. We thank everyone for their continued support.
