A number of new Teacher Training Colleges for Foreign Languages (Nauczycielskie Kolegium Jezykow Obcych) had also opened
in Poland to attempt to meet the increased demand largely for English teachers
at the primary and secondary school levels. I was asked to teach American
Literature to these students. The only problem was, the college had no books
for this course. So, we read photocopies of whatever short stories and poems
I could get my hands on. Oh well, the relative gentility of the Teachers'
College proved a welcome contrast to the often raucous Politechnika. And
as you can see, some of the same stereotypes hold up in Poland as in the
United States. Technical programs tend to attract male students while
teaching attracts more female students.
