Rzeszow has a population of around 200,000. During the time I was there
this number included 4-5 Peace Corps Volunteers, 2 Canadian teachers with
Solidarity Eastern Europe, 1 American with World Teach, another American and
Canadian teaching independently (both were brought in to teach business courses
at the Politechnika but ended up teaching English instead) and a couple of
assorted Brits. I have no idea why they were there, they never became part of
our North American clique. Rzeszow had a couple of movie theaters which usually
showed American movies with Polish subtitles. There was also a concert hall which
housed Rzeszow's Philharmonic Orchestra. They weren't anything to rave about but
often had good visiting soloists. Besides, I was impressed that a city of Rzeszow's
size could even support an orchestra. I suspect this was a remnant of the communist
era.
