Oddly enough, there aren't a lot of pictures on the web of Rzeszow's most distinctive monument, but you can see it in outline from this picture. This was a fairly generally despised monument to the Soviet liberators/motherland. It is extemely large, centrally located, has a distinctive shape which evokes a lot of rather rude comparisons. In short it's almost impossible to miss. The North Americans in the area regarded it rather affectionately as one of the remaining vestiges of Socialist Realist art (In fact, Jeff chided me for not having a picture of it on my web site. This one's for you Jeff). Most of the smaller monuments had been torn down, and streets with communist names renamed for Polish heroes, but this monument was too big to destroy. Daniel and I thought the city of Rzeszow should have commercialized it and made keyrings, pencil sharpeners, etc. for souvenirs. I think it also would have made a great snow globe. As far as I know, these ideas have not yet been carried out.
