This is one of the few cases where I unhesitatingly will prefer a private (pirate) recording with inadequate documentation to a commercial recording of the same work with first class documentation. The reason is very simply that I strongly prefer Nicolai Gedda's interpretation of Jean to James McCracken's. While Gedda's singing rings out loud and clear, McCracken's seems forced throughout, and he fails to get into the character. This is probably Gedda's finest work on records, with him giving a great interpretation of one of the most difficult tenor roles in the repertory. Marilyn Horne is also in much better voice in the earlier (1970) broadcast than in the later (1977) Met based commercial recording.
When the opera is performed in Vienna in 1998 some additional music that has been recently rediscovered will be added. It is also likely that a recording will be issued.
