After John's death made Nancy a 39-year-old widow, she soon proved she was fully capable of running a plantation without the aid of an overseer. A superb horsewoman known for her energy, her gardens, her long wavy black hair, and her tall and erect stature, Nancy was also devoted to education and religion. Nancy herself was educated at Mt. Zion, Georgia, under noted teacher Nathan S. Beman.
Nancy was gentle but firm with her children and her help. Her noble and disciplined character set the stage for her the success of her children and grandchildren in the face of adversity.
Nancy and John's home was refuge for Methodist clergy, friends and relations near and far, and needy wanderers, black and white alike.
