| The Slaton home was said to have been made of hand-carved wood brought in from Georgia and was at one time two stories. After Nancy's death on 8/16/1882, the upper story was torn down, reputedly because of noises emanating from the upper floor that sounded eerily like Nancy's breathing which in her last months was asthmatic and labored. | |||||||||
| By the time of Nancy's death, all but one of her children had either predeceased her, or had married and moved out of the county. Only Caroline Slaton Doster remained. The Dosters helped Nancy financially during Reconstruction, and no doubt helped her to manage the plantation in her later years. Caroline was able to keep some of the Slaton property in the family for many years. Today, the Slaton property is again in the hands of a Slaton descendant. | |||||||||
