Comments:
I have loved the pipe organ since I first discovered it in 1968 at age 18. Between 1974-1978 I was doing independent research on flue pipe acoustics, relating scaling and cutup to operating pressure and output. Between 1978-1982 I wrote a technical column dealing with my findings in Theatre Organ magazine.
In 1984 I received U.S. Patent 4429656 on a new class of whistle of extreme power and efficiency. I called it a toroidal whistle, since it's power chamber resembled a toroid rather than a cylinder. Using a blower of 150 HP delivering 15 PSI @ 1800 CFM I was able to achieve an output of 125 dBC @ 100 feet (155 dB @ 1 meter) at a frequency of 430 Hz on axis. This is about the same output as a large steam Tyfon horn as used on modern ocean liners. Its output exceeds that of any existing cylindrical whistle, such as the three bell Smith Hyson whistles once used on ocean liners like the Titanic and Mauretania.
In 1987 I received U.S. Patent 4686928 on an inverted toroidal horn loaded whistle capable of 135 dB @ 100 feet (165 dB @ 1 meter) on axis using only 15 PSI @ 1350 CFM. This whistle is as loud as a 50 HP rotating directional siren, less directional and has improved far field propagation and penetration of buildings as compared to a 50 HP siren, due to its low harmonic content.
Between 1988-1994 I was publisher of Horn & Whistle magazine, the journal of the Air Horn and Steam Whistle Enthusiasts. Between 1994-1996 I wrote regularly on the e-discussion list, Piporg-L.
Most recently the results of my experimental research have been used to prove a number of theories regarding the generation of sound in flue pipes by a Dr. Wade Blocker of Albuquerque, NM, who independently approached the answers to the same questions from a theoretical viewpoint and arrived at the same conclusions.
For more information and videos of a small pipe organ I designed and built between 1975-1976 and my toroidal whistle test at the Greater Cincinnati/Northern KY Airport in July, 1982, visit my URL at switchboard.com and Dr. Blocker's URL at nmol.com listed above.

Thanks for the site, I've just always liked organs. I'm from suburban Detroit working in Louisville for Ford. Five years ago while down here I went to an organ recital. I love it. Where can I get info on recitals?

What a beautiful photo of a gallery pipe organ, no
doubt somewhere in the vicinity of Louisville.
Web sites such as this are important to the
furtherance and advance of the pipe organ. Thanks
for all that you have done to make it so and to
keep it going. Sincerely. Tom in the Dese
