ManBREAK - Come And See
THE bloke reviewing this record for Billboard decided this five-piece from Liverpool was working the territory somewhere between the "politically charged ferocity of Rage Against The Machine and the irrepressible melodicism of...Frankie Goes To Hollywood", which to me tells me he doesn't get out enough! If anything, ManBREAK are the quintessetial distillation of everything utterly brilliant to come out of the UK in the past 15 years without falling into any restrictive fashion statement. They are quite simply brilliant.
AND chock full of diversity. One minute they're powering along with a chunkarama News Of The World, the next they're in McCartney (the god bits) country with God's Never Heard Of You. They've got that huge sound that gave Tears For Fears so much edge, yet with the intelligent, questioning and yet optimistic lyrics that give you something to think about as well as bop along to.
All comparisons suck really but how else do I get across their breadth of their sound? Truly intelligent pop with the occasional explective-free rap, anger without the angst, politics with poetry, Lenin with the McCartney. Find it, buy it, play it heaps and start changing the world instead of just moaning about it.
