What's with that subscription box?
It's still summertime here in the northern hemispheres, especially in the Hawaiian Islands. I'm still staying underwater as much as possible, but I come up now and then to check my email. Happily, I've had several letters this month from folks writing for the zine. You may be amazed at what we've come up with this month. So adjust your mask and snorkel, take a deep breath, and dive in.

Welcome Subscribers! -- Before we get to the meat, I want to talk about the potatoes. This is the first issue published since we started the Vienna Online newsletter subscription list. A special welcome goes out to all those who have responded positively to the initial invitations to join the list. Anyone who wants to become a member need only fill in the form at the left with your name (or nickname) and email address, and the amazing "Bravenet" takes care of the rest. You'll get an email with an URL to click on to become a member in good standing of the list. It's amazingly easy. And, if you ever want to unsubscribe, that's easy to do, too. But with all the great stuff we've got coming, I hope you won't be doing that. Don't worry about getting barraged with messages or about your email address being sold or anything hideous like that. I only plan one, at the most two, emails a month about the newest issue as soon as it's online and ready to read. And Bravenet is a reputable service firm that guarantees it won't misuse the lists it generates.

Banner makers, make me a banner -- Readers of the Vienna forums may have seen my note about designing a GeoGuide banner for rotation in the GeoCities GeoGuides. Those of you unfamiliar with GeoCities and GeoGuides, let me explain. See that mess of stuff all the way at the top of the page to the right of the Vienna Online gif? There's an ad in there underneath the tabs coded email, guestbook, etc. As you go from page to page, the ad changes automatically. You can probably make it change simply by refreshing this page, too. The ad is controlled by GeoCities and many of the ads are linked to other GeoCities homesteaders who have the GeoGuide installed on their pages. GeoGuides are one way to stop popup ads, which are several degrees more irritating than some of the ads that can show up in a GeoGuide. Since we have them, we might as well have an ad in them, don't you think? Me, too. So I asked for someone to design a nice 468x60 pixel ad to put in the rotation. The one here is an example of my own late-night attempt to put together something interesting enough to make people want to click on it. Has to be less than 8K in size and the dimensions mentioned. Other than that, the sky's the limit. Surely someone can do better than mine! Send it to me at viennaonline@oocities.com. Now for the rest of the mag:

Star Wars vs. Ring of the Nibelung -- Klassiks has put together one of those comparison pieces that shows how a new show is like an old show. In this case, he's comparing Star Wars with the Ring of the Nibelung. Seriously, we should have seen the similarities a long time ago. I always thought Luke had a lot of Sigmunde in him. :o)

More Ring and some Wolfgang -- I've got a couple of new sites for "Visiting Vienna." One is a feature on the aforementioned Ring of the Nibelung, while the other pays homage to Mozart in a sytlistic way that also might result in the author making a couple of dollars.

Contest winners -- Curtis has announced the winners of the first quarter of Celebrating a Millenium of Arts, and we have them on a page this month. Be sure to visit the winners' pages and tell them you heard about it in Vienna Online.

Vienna Award pages -- And speaking of winners, the Vienna Award recipients have gotten a separate page. You'll find the winners from before April 1999 at http://www.oocities.org/Vienna/5000/va-archive.html, while the recent winners and the application form are still at ..Vienna/5000/va.html. Makes for easier navigation.

Lots of other stories and columns are waiting for you inside. Click the Archives link on the front page to see them all. So freshen up that cup of coffee and have a nice long visit in Vienna Online.
