Vegetarianism-the word originated from the Latin word 'Vegetus' meaning "whole, sound, fresh, lively" and the word was formed in 1842.Vegetarianism was advocated by many philosophers, even before scientific advancements proved the dangers of meat eating.Pythagoras,Plato,Plutarch,Ovid, the Buddha,Mahaveera,Ashoka the great,Mahatma Gandhi,Milton,Pope,Shelley,Voltair,Rousseau,Tolstoy,Newton and G.B.Shaw were just a few of the world's greatest thinkers who contributed to animal welfare by advocating vegetarianism.
What were they thinking ? Why do we need to follow their example? And what's wrong with eating meat? To answer all these questions and more, I've compiled some literature here for your reading.
