AUGUST 30TH

DIVISION 2

VILLAGE C 4 West Hagley 0

Just the start we needed. Goals from Allison, Penfold, Fryer and Titheridge

DIVISION 8

VILLAGE E 9 Old Wulfs 2

Just the start for the Es. With no goalkeeper Forbes was rushed into action between the sticks. There proved no need for him as goals came from Newland and Marfleet. After one was conceded Village took a grip on the game and went in at the half, 4-2 to the good with further goals by Kyei and Newland again. After a dodgy Kyei penalty was converted Old Wulfs lost the plot and coceded more. Special goals scored by Chapman (on debut) and Marfleet. A further one for Newland to complete his hatrick and one for Khan left it comfortable for Village

SEPTEMBER 6th

PREMIER DIVISION

AFA Premier Division Kynoch 1 VILLAGE F.C. 1

A typically gritty performance by Kynoch on a bobbly pitch may this a tough season's baptism. However, we dominated the first half and Laurie Carey headed home a Carson Tweedie corner on the half hour to put us ahead. We had a slack period halfway through the second half where Kynoch came into the game and with 20 minutes to go they got an equaliser on the break. Afterwards we hit the underside of the bar and spurned other chances, finally spending the last ten minutes in their penalty area without making what you could call a certain chance. Never a danger of losing but a disappointing outcome.

DIVISION ONE

Wake Green 2 VILLAGE 3

The first game of the season and it appeared as if there was a hangover from the end of last season as the team was very lethargic in their approach to the game. They were unable to create anything, as the stand in keeper Bain struggled manfully to keep the home side at bay. It was inevitable that after missing from 2 yards and a number of breakaways that Wake Green registered before half time.

A few harsh words and the revitalising energies of H²O led to a new Village taking more control of the game. In the 10th minute of the 2nd half an inspired run down the wing and a cut back by Vaughan resulted in one of the Wake Green defenders putting the ball in the net. Not content with this 10 minutes later from a Revell corner another defender gave us the lead. An unlikely lead but Village looked on course for victory before goal of the season was stuck. From a cleared corner a Wake green player unleashed a rocket of a shot from fully 35 yards that flew into the corner of the net. Our keeper was still looking for the ball as the opposition ran off to celebrate. The last laugh however was on them as Revell cross was laid into the path of substitute Nagle, who set it up perfectly for an impressive Howard to rifle the ball into the net to clinch an opening day victory.

Man of the Match going to a hobbling Griffin on his return to the Bs.

DIVISION EIGHT

Royal Heath Rangers 1 VILLAGE F.C. 'E' 2

I know its early in the season but after a couple of years of struggle the Es sit proudly at the top of their 16 team division this week. This time we went one down early on but fought back to snatch it through goals from Mark Fisher and Mark Chambers although hard work all round and stout defending were instrumental in securing the points.

VILLAGE SUNDAY

Black Horse 1 VILLAGE SUNDAY 2

The Sunday team came from behind to secure a hard fought victory on the opening weekend of the season over Black Horse.

After beginning brightly, Village conceded after 20 minutes when spurning the chance to clear and allowing the Horse forward to dance through the defence to slot past Quinn. Five minutes before half-time Village equalised with a quality move. Glattback attacked down the left and laid the ball back to Coulson who crossed first time with pace. Forbes stole in behind the defence to expertly angle his header into the corner.

Village came out stronger in the second half and took the lead mid way through. Cypher took the ball down the right wing, cut inside the last defender and arrowed a shot into the bottom corner. Village then defended stoutly to hold on to their lead, but still had opportunities on the break, notable when Carter forced a smart save from the Horse keeper. Quinn was in inspirational form for Village making 2 stupendous stop late on the ensure Village collected the three points.

SEPTEMBER 13th

PREMIER DIVISION

Cambridge United 2 VILLAGE FC 1

A disappointing result this. We seemed to remember last year's home defeat too much and early on (to coin a cliche) gave them too much respect. Still 1-0 down at half-time wasn't a disaster. The second half we dominated but sadly a defensive slip-up saw their lively forwards get in and stretch the lead. We pulled one back from the spot and applied tons of pressure late on that had them rocking but they held on.

DIVISION ONE

VILLAGE FC 'B' 1 Sutton United 'B' 1

A game with plenty of incident. The first of them being Village having to play most of the game with another substitute keeper. Dicicco got an early bang to the head which resulted in him needing 4 stitches in a 'cut lip'. Forbes in goal was enough to give any team a fright and Village duly took the lead in the 30th minute when Allison raced onto a loose ball to secure a deserved one nil half time score.

Unfortunately Village failed to capitalise on many of their numerous chances in the second half and allowed Sutton to creep back into the game. Through goalkeeping errors Sutton hit a post and then the bar and this seemed to revive their interest. In the last 10 minutes as the team fell asleep from a throw in Sutton headed the equaliser. Two points definitely dropped.

Some good solid performances from Rogers and Stoner, but Man of the match goes to John Denley.

Division Four

Diamond Windows 0 VILLAGE F.C. 'D' 1

First game of the season for the Ds saw a hard fought away win. Dave Csondor notched just before half-time.

DIVISION 8

VILLAGE F.C. 'E' 3 St Francis 6

First defeat of the season for the league leading 'E' team. This time the opposition were stronger and younger and although we led 3-2 at the break, they proved ruthless in the second taking all their chances. Mark Titheridge scored all our goals!

Festival League Major Cup

Boars Head 3 VILLAGE SUNDAY 2

The Sunday team crashed out of the Major Cup at the first hurdle in a lack-lustre display. Without any assistance from a particularly young and nervous referee who struggled to handle Boars Head's bullying tactics, Village went in 1-0 down at half-time thanks to a dubious penalty award for an offence that took place 4 yards outside the penalty area.

Boars head scored twice more early in the second half, the second goal scored by a player a full 20 yards offside. Village rallied late on and goals from Cypher and a cool finish from youngster Matt Atkins in the last minute gave the scoreline a more realistic look.

SEPTEMBER 20th

PREMIER DIVISION

VILLAGE FC 1 Sutton United 3

I feel a bit like Arsene over this one but we really were robbed horribly in this one. After 20 minutes we scored a great headed goal from Laurie Carey (assisted by Nick Longley) and five minutes later it should have been all over. Clean through on goal, Dan Howard was scythed from behind. A clear penalty and sending off but no action. Minutes later their centre-forward simply threw Matt Baldwin out of the way and was allowed to go on and score. We then rattled the bar and missed a clear two on one for a 1-1 half- time score. It didn't get any better although we continued to out football a rugged Sutton side throughout the game and they scored twice more as we pressed on. We had one shot two feet over the line and astonishingly the ref played on and the final insult was to have a goal disallowed for 'offside' when three players were between scorer and goal even when he shot!

DIVISION ONE

Sparkbrook PPR 2 VILLAGE FC 'B' 0

A game of errors for the B boys. Allowing a soft corner which resulted in a soft easy header for Sparkbrook to take the lead after 2 minutes. Vilage never ever got into their stride and were on the back foot for the first 20 minutes and it was only through some good keeping from new keeper McCarrick, and some strange decision making by the official, that the score remained that way. Although Village got better they never quite were able to take any sort of control over the game.

Another soft goal at the start of the 2nd half effectively sealed the match. A mix up with Kennedy and the keeper resulted in a Nayim style effort that sailed over the keeper's head for another great strike against B team keepers this season. The rest of the game was played out amongst some brutish like tackling and some unsavoury play. Not pleasant.

Man of the match to Rogers who yet again turns in another powerful performance.

Division 2

Solihull Gas 4 VILLAGE F.C. 'C' 0

The Cs finally got back into action and after their earlier 4-0 win are now back at evens. The Gas are a good side and we had a few new boys to fit in and we can have few complaints about the scoreline but certainly never disgraced ourselves.

Division 4

VILLAGE F.C. 'D' 2 Acocks Green 1

A better result this one to preserve the Ds 100% record. 1-0 down after 25 minutes against the erstwhile league leaders, Matt Green converted a penalty 2 minutes later. Five minutes further on he rattled the bar with a 25 yard free-kick and 5 minutes into the second half Mark Chambers muscled his way in to score from 12 yards. After that we missed the better of the chances but were soaking up the pressure towards the end. hard work but three points.

Division 8

Walsall Phoenix 'C' 6 VILLAGE F.C. 'E' 1

This was a disappointment to the 9 men who turned up (communication difficulties to blame for this one) as they fought hard against a rather stronger tide. Consensus was that Phoenix weren't even that good but having played once with 8 (we held out for 70 minutes but lost 4-0) I know it cant have been easy. Still the Es remain in midtable with a 15-15 goal difference!

Festival League

VILLAGE FC SUNDAY 4 David Lloyd 1

The Sunday team maintained their 100% league record against David Lloyd. The first half was evenly fought, with David Lloyd were somewhat fortunate to go in 1-0 up at half-time.

The Sundays began the second half with purpose and Ali Gorrie pounced on a goalkeeping error within 5 minutes of the restart and put Village level. James Cypher poked home from close range soon after and Mike Glattback converted a goalkeeping parry to make the score 3-1 by the midpoint of the second half. Dan Whyborn rounded off the scoring after the goalkeeper failed to hold a Forbes free kick. Village had numerous chances throughout the game and were deserved winners.

27th September

Premier Division

Cresconians 3 Village 0

Division One

Village B 0 – Brittania 1

Another silly mistake leading to another Village defeat and the goal shy side are really suffering. A game where we attacked for most of the 90 minutes, but to no avail. Countless chances went begging and the team. The team worked tirelessly, but lacked the quality in the last 3rd of the pitch to take advantage of a poor Brittania side.

We were made to pay such poor finishing when Brittania were correctly awarded a stupid penalty in the last 5 minutes

Man of the match to Rob Kennedy.

Division Two

Handsworth GSOB B 0 Village 2

Division Four

Billesley United 7 Village 0

A 7-0 pasting by league leaders Billesley United aside.

Division Eight

Village 0 Coton Green 3

Festival League

Village 1 Mahal Sunday 2

First they threw away their 100% start to the season with a lacklustre 1-2 defeat against Mahal Sunday. Village were a goal down within 15 minutes after defensive confusion lead to an open goal for the Mahal forward.

In the second half, Mike Glattback curled a free kick from wide right into the corner of the net. However with just 5 minutes remaining a big punt upfield caught the Village defence square and a point was snatched from our grasp.

4th October

Premier Division

Kynoch 3 Village 2

A bad defeat after their keeper was sent off with us 2-1 ahead!

St Thomas Annex 4 – Village B 3 (County Junior Cup - AET)

A game Village should never have lost. Against a team of less ability Village again conceded an early goal. Having to chase another game the luckless Village striker finally registered a goal as John Denley finished of a Rogers pass to go in at 1 a piece.

Phil Kyei finally got off the mark for the Bs when he struck a lovely 20-yard shot into the bottom of the net. Considering he’d just missed one from 3 yards on the stroke of half time it was a very pleasing score. Village was rarely troubled after that, and it was with much astonishment that with 10 minutes to go that Village conceded a very silly goal to allow the tie to go into extra time.

Extra time rejuvenated St Thomas and they registered 2 more goals past part-time keeper Bain before debutante Marc Cunningham pulled one back from another substitute, Nagle’s through ball. A Penfold strike right on full-time nearly sent the tie to penalties, but it was not to be.

Man of the match to Howard Rogers

Division Two

Walsall Phoenix 2 Village 1

Division Four

Old Wulfs C 1 Village 0

Where perhaps a lack of confidence contributed to us getting late into a game we should have won.

Division Eight

Village 2 Sutton United D 4

Festival League

Hamstead YFC 1 Village Sunday 1

A hard fought point away at Hamstead YFC A followed, Village taking the lead in the second minute when the Cypher brothers combined, Paul slipping a through ball to James who rifled in for his fourth goal in five games.

Village conceded unfortunately mid way through the first half when a corner was not cleared and a speculative overhead hook back into the penalty area looped over the man jumping on the line and below the crossbar. In spite of good pressure in the second half and an excellent defensive display, there was no further scoring in the second half. Final Score: 1-1

11th October

Premier Division

Village 4 Lasermail 0

Scorers Newton, Tweedie pen, Howard and Jarmy

Division One

Old Wulfs B 3 – Village B 0

Although the scoreline suggests a good hiding this was a much- improved performance by Village against a very good Old Wulfs side. On a lovely pitch they put away 3 out of 4 chances, whereas Village did not even test the keeper with their 3 chances.

The first goal coming from a lovely diagonal ball between the 2 centre-halves and slotted beyond the reach of Dicicco. On 30 minutes this lead was doubled by an equally well taken goal. At 2-0 in the half Village were not totally out of the game, but were made to rue missed chances by the forwards. The game was effectively killed by a third by Old Wulfs. Village played the last 10 minutes with 10 men, but the effort and commitment was a lot better in this defeat than it has been in the last few weeks.

Man of the match to Graham Chapman playing in a new position of right back.

Division Two

Shirley Athletic 3 Village 2 (Minor cup)

A 2-3 defeat to Shirley Athletic in the Minor Cup was disappointing, especially as we were 2-1 up with 5 minutes to go.

Division Four

Manchester Wanderers 0 Village 7

Confidence was restored by a 7-0 win against Manchester Wanderers in which John Vaughan hit 4, Mark Chambers 2 and Kirk Norford the final goal.

Division Eight

Village 1 Walsall Phonix C 6

Festival League

Boars Head 0 Village 0

There were few chances for either side although John Delaney in the Village goal saved well at the feet of one of the Boars Head strikers near the end of the game.

18th October

Premier Division

Smethwick Hall OB 0 Village 3

Scorers Newton 2 and Conlon

Hunt Cup

Village 4 Brereton Social 7

So we won't be going to Molineux for the final for another year. It has to be said though that Brereton are a West Midlands League side and that we held them at 4-4 until late in the game. Mark Sumner (impressive) and John Vaughan both got two goals.

Division Four

Queslett Park Rangers 4 Village 0

By all accounts 1-0 might have been a fairer reflection of what happened.

Division Eight

Village 7 Handsworth GSOB D 0

Pride was restored with a 7-0 drubbing of Handsworth GSOB D. Phil Newland, Tom Candish and John Millard all netted two and Kirk Norford one in a high energy performance all round.

Veterans Cup

Sutton Vets B 1 – Village Vets 7

The first victory in living memory for the Vets team. Welcoming back from his 4-year sabbatical Trevor Shields added some stability to an excellent rear guard action. The result was never in doubt from the moment Dan Howard fluked in a free kick out of the reach of the despairing dive of the Sutton keeper. His second however was a well-executed volley from the edge of the box. Missed chances by the ‘forwards’ Forbes & Csonder were irrelevant as Syd Khan made it 3-0 at the half.

Sutton obviously came out strong for the 2nd half but were unable to break down a resolute Village defence held together by Mark Fisher and Dave Bennett. Another Khan goal seemed to kill the game but after Sutton got one back the scoreline was made to look a little lob-sided by Village scoring 3 goals in the last 5 minutes all from Khan corners and Csonder flick ons. Scores being Bennett 2 and Campbell one.

Man of the match to Dan Howard.

Festival League

Village 1 U-Fit Windows 3

Finally U-Fit windows took advantage of an extremely disappointing display last week that led to a 3-1 defeat.

25th October

Premier Division

Colinthians 0 Village 2

Under difficult conditions we thoroughly outplayed a competent Colinthians side for a 2-0 scoreline with Longley and Conlon the scorers. A third clean sheet was nice with the only disappointment being missing the chance to add further goals from our umpteen chances.

Division One

Village B 3 – BBGR 2

The best football the B team has played in well over a year. The first half was like watching a different team from the previous weeks. The rain may have poured down but the confidence seemed to have returned and the fast flowing passing game returned. This culminated in Phil Kyei running onto a 1-1 with the keeper and after being denied once by the keeper, and then a defender on the line he put the team and the manager out of his misery by putting the ball in the back of the net. This lead was doubled on 30 minutes by a well-taken Nagle penalty after the dangerous Kyei was felled in the box. At 2-0 Village were certainly not flattered.

Table topping BBGR however were not going to be easily taken and a determined second half showing led to them getting one back from a free-kick strike. A clear-cut penalty was denied to the ever-threatening Kyei, and this was made even worse when BBGR went on to equalise. However the resole and the determination that was perhaps missing so far this season came to the fore and Richard Hadley stuck a sweetly taken goal in the last 10 minutes.

An excellent performance and a good display of heart when needed from all 12 players, from stand in keeper Bain, Hadley and Williams at the back to Nagle and Kyei up front.

Man of the match Rich Hadley.

November 2003

1st November

Premier Division

Sutton United 3 VILLAGE F.C. 2

A much changed A team struggled to get into the pace of the game against league leaders Sutton and soon found themselves a goal down (a cruel deflection). After slapping one against their post we gave away two more sloppy goals in a dismal first half performance. Three changes shortly after the break changed our look and our luck and we got one back through Dave Conlon. The rest of the game saw us dominate and if we had taken one of our chances earlier in the half they have gone like a house of cards. As it happens our second came with only four minutes left through a Dave Newton penalty and their was no time left. Lessons here on getting into the game from the start.

AFA Junior Cup Round Two

Silhill 3 VILLAGE F.C. 'B' 5

A competent performance from the B team that kept their run going. As seems usual they soon went behind after 4 minutes after some slack defending. Village was under pressure for the 1st 15 minutes but with Villages’ 1st attack of sorts however they scored with Rogers getting onto a Nagle long throw. These and any dead-ball situation was the result of many of the Village goals. Vaughan nicked one home in the 19th minute after a Revell assist. However Village soon allowed Silhill to score from a far post cross to take the game to 2-2 at the half.

Quick strikes from Nagle (on one leg) at the near post and a fluke by the ever-present ‘Johnny on the spot’ Vaughan seemed to make the game safe for Village. And as is there want Village went of the boil and allowed a poor Silhill team back into the game. Without a fully alert Cullis on duty Silhill would have pulled more than the one goal back. The result was put beyond doubt by another Rogers headed goal from a Revell free kick in the last minute.

Man of the Match to Cullis for making some remarkable saves when the team needed him.

Bill Hill Cup Round One

Shirley Athletic 'B' 1 VILLAGE F.C. 2

A good result this in a tough match. Satisfaction was marred by a nasty incident in which John Vaughan was taken out by the keeper after he had lofted the ball over him. John has subsequently faced a lengthy operation on his cheekbone and we hope he recovers soon. Scorers were Warren Foy (penalty) and Mark Sumner.

Bill Hill Cup Round One

Shirley Athletic 'C' 4 VILLAGE F.C.'D' 0

Not so good this one for the Ds who have struggled of late to filed a settled side and subsequently to get results. This one probably should have been 1 or 2 nil in fairness but we didn't help the cause by getting a man send off for violent conduct. It left us a mountain to climb.

Division Eight

Wake Green 'D' 1 Village F.C. 'E' 2

A hard slog in heavy conditions. Goals from Tom Candish and Stuart Kelly had given us the interval lead but we were hanging on a bit at the end for the points which took us safely into midtable.

County Sunday Junior Cup

Gatehouse Tavern 1 VILLAGE SUNDAY 2

Village took the lead mid way through the first half when Mike Lea pounced to round the keeper and slot the ball home. He then had a perfectly good second turned down on the stroke of half time when he charged down the goalie but was deemed to use his hand. Soon after half-time Village stretched their lead when Andy Lea's corner was skillfully met by Mike Glattback for his third goal of the campaign.

Village let Gatehouse back in with 10 minutes to go but defended stoutly to run out 2-1 winners.

November 8th

Senior Cup Round One

VILLAGE F.C. 4 Malremo Rangers 1

Just about the best performance of the season this one. Against a lively Malremo, confident as they rise up the leagues, we got off to a sluggish start and had to weather some early pressure. Conditions were perfect for football at Aston and we knocked the ball around pretty convincingly as Steve Marfleet notched twice before they pulled one back. In the second half inspired by a great performance from Paul Bennett we played some lovely football and eventually a resilient Malremo crumbled as Dave Newton with a superb header from Carson Tweedie's cross and Nick Longley (with his nose!) added two more.

Division One

Britannic Assurance 2 VILLAGE F.C. 'B' 4

Another good half of football from Village, but this time it came in the 2nd half. As is customary Village gave away a simple early-headed goal after 6 minutes. Against a strong and competent Brittanic team Village finally began to settle and were rewarded when Dan Hatcher playing in his 73rd and last game, scored his 5th ever goal for Village reacting well to Nagle’s flick on from a Revell corner. Against the wind a 1-1 scoreline would have been acceptable, but a stupid penalty given away in the lst couple of minutes meant Village went into the half 2-1 down.

The 2nd half was a different story and the impressive Nagle slid a sweet ball through to Vaughan who showed great composure to make the game equal soon after the half started. Things got even better in the 17th minute of the game when Nagle reacted well to a Revell pass and stroked the ball past a well-beaten keeper. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Brittanic and the rest of the half belonged to Village. The 4th goal wasn’t long in coming from substitute Penfold from an alert piece of play from Stimpson to make the final score 4-2.

Impressive first starts of the season for Nick Hay in goal and Mike Stimpson out on the right wing. Hadley, Williams, Rogers and Revell also did well, but man of the match goes, finally, to Gareth Nagle.

Division Two

Shirely Athletic 'B' 0 VILLAGE F.C. 'C' 2

An excellent first half performance put this game to bed by half-time against the rugged Shirley side that had caused so much mayhem the week before. A blistering 25 yard drive from Dan Stoner and a tap in from Craig McAllister (or was it the other way round Dan?) sealed the points as the Cs put themselves firmly in the upper half of the table only 4 points off the lead.

Division Four

Cresconians 'B' 3 VILLAGE F.C. 'D' 1

The Ds slide down the table continues, as they suffer the brunt of the club's continuing goalkeeper crisis and on the occasion one or two other crucial absentees. Whilst rather unlucky to be 2-0 down early on, a good goal from Phil Tompkins gave us some hope before the break. Afterwards we were on top but after Stuart Kelly went off we looked a bit stretched physically, they got another and we never really threatened after that.

Division Eight

VILLAGE F.C. 'E' 4 Cresconians 'C' 5

The outbreak of narcolepsy that so dogs America's athletes has spread to the D team defenders and a poor first half saw us 4-0 down at the break. Two goals from Kirk Norford and one each from Mike Walkers and Phil Newland brought us back into the game and in the last 10 we made (and missed) further chances that would have brought a not undeserved point.

Festival Minor Cup

VILLAGE F.C SUNDAY 0 David Lloyd 3

David proved rather more resilient than he ever did playing Davis Cup tennis for England as a catalogue of misfortune saw us eliminated from the Cup 3-0. We were up against it from the start with only 11 players making themselves available. Andy Lea was injured after 10 minutes (broken ankle) and we struggled from then on.

15th November

Birmingham County Vase

Pilkington XXX 4 VILLAGE F.C. 0

This was always going to be a tough one and we had the be at our best against high flying Midland Combination side Pilks. Actually we were for the first half and we gave them a shock, missing the best three chances of the half (all missed!). Inevitably they took their only chance and instead of us going in ahead, they did. They did recognise what we had done and the second half saw a different more aggressive Pilks and two defensive slips saw them stretch the lead before we had a perfectly good goal disallowed. I could have taken 1-3 - it would have been fair - but when they score with the final kick, the scoreline took on a cruel and unreal feel.

Division One

Village F.C. 'B' 4 Welwyn 0

Another convincing performance from village saw them climb up the table. Against a poor Welwyn side it took a little while for the team to get going and it was in the 20th minute that Phil Kyei was able to notch his 3rd of the season for Village. The lead was soon doubled by joint top scorer Rogers when he was able to get on the end of a lovely Mike Stimpson cross to leave the score 2-0 at the half.

Village didn’t finish off the game until late in the day when 2 strikes from the ever running Nagle and the equally impressive Stimpson made the score line more reflective of the overall game.

More solid performances all round. The defence finally keeping a clean sheet, but man of the match goes to Gavin ‘slim line’ Revell.

Division Two

Wake Green 'B' 7 Village F.C. 'C' 1

A bit of a shock this one for the improving C team. Wakes had done nothing to suggest a scoreline like this was on the cards in previous matches. Mark Sumner added to his growing tally but not until Wakes were out of sight.

Division Four

Village F.C. 'D' 3 FCS Lasermail 5

This was a tough one that might actually have gone our way against the league leaders. We were down early on but equalised before they stretched their lead to 3-1. We then matched them blow for blow and had three or four golden opportunities that went begging. It was in doubt to the final whistle when they got their final clinching goal. Matt Green (penalty), Andy Bown and Rob Dunford were our markspeople.

Division Eight

Anglo Metals 5 Village F.C. 'E' 3

Another game against league leaders - this time Anglo who probably just about deserved to win. After going two behind we came back level only for them to snatch a half-time lead and shortly after to go 4-2 up. We came back again but in the end a younger, fitter side beat but didn't outplay us. Phil Newland (2) and Kirk Norford netted.

Festival League

UFIT Windows 2 VILLAGE F.C. 1

Another disappointing result although the performance was OK We need to get more shots on goal and stop conceding last minute winners.

22nd November

Premier Division

VILLAGE F.C. 6 Old Nortonians 2

Newly promoted Old Norts had had a good start but this one certainly burst their bubble. Actually for much of the game it was competitive as even though we took a second minute lead through Steve Marfleet, they took advantage of some poor concentration to draw level, and we only had Nick Longley's header put us back in front just before the break. We'd been good though and really got the passing going after the interval as some excellent finishes from Steve Marfleet (a great shot from out wide), Dave Conlon and substitute Andy Bancroft to a softly conceded penalty finished the scoring. The best goal of all (our sixth) when Paul Bennett volleyed home from the edge of the box straight from a corner from the left.

Division One

Silhill 1 Village F.C. 'C' 4

Another slow start from Village where we conceded and after 8 minutes. However top scorer Rogers once again got on the end of another Nagle assist to level the scores 5 minutes later. Village began to gain control and the ever impressive Stimpson was able to pounce on a Silhill mistake to allow Village to go into the half 2-1 ahead.

Village continued to dominate in the 2nd half and this was rewarded with Kyei finishing another move orchestrated by Nagle. On his debut, Mark Sumner ran through from a Phil Kyei through ball to make the score 4-1 in the 75th minute.

The game was only spoiled when Kyei was sent off in the last 5 minutes for some handbags fisticuffs.

Man of the Match to Mark Sumner.

Division Two

Silhill 'B' 2 Village F.C. 'C' 3

After a dismal performance last week a return to form for the normally consistent C's. Andy Campbell opened the scoring early on after latching onto a misguided Silhill back pass and coolly dispatching. Silhill's first half equaliser came soon after from some poor defensive marking, but didn't mask the superior football the C's were playing.

Spirits could have dropped when Silhill took the lead shortly after the break. However, bolstered by the trickery of John Denley and Martin Bell upfront, the C's hit back to gain a well earned 3-2 victory (Denley netting twice). Special praise also for Trevor Shields in goal who commanded his area with aplomb.

Holder Cup Quarter Final

VILLAGE F.C.'D' 5 Colinthians 'D' 0

Well we made hard work of this one against aside from a few divisions down. In fact they had several chances in the first half to go in better than level at nil apiece. Fortunately sanity prevailed once we got our first and the rest of the game was a romp as the Ds became the fits Village side this year to make a semi-final. I think the scorers were Tom Candish (3) Dan Howard and Mark Chambers but my informant wasn't very reliable.

Division 8

Eccleston and Hart 'B' 4 VILLAGE F.C.'E' 3 (match abandoned)

A nasty one this. Out of character for the AFA. Eccleston aren't a pleasant team (all bad mouthing and lack of eye contact – in Division 8 for goodness sake!!) but there was nothing (well bar the consistent drunken racist abuse from the touchline against Kirk Norford) to suggest the players' complete lack of discipline when Phil Newland pulled us back to 3-4 with about ten minutes to go.Thereafter two of our players were gratuitously repeatedly assaulted and two of theirs sent off. When their spectators suggested that the '"!$£ in the black will get it next" the referee wisely called a halt. Hopefully we wont have to play them again as I imagine they'll be on their way out.

Premier Division Old Wulfrunians 3 VILLAGE F.C. 2

We really are having one of those seasons. To be fair we were underwhelming early on and gave away a dozy first before the crowd was in their seats. Then one of their midfielders pushed (?) Benno after a strong challenge. Off he went – harsh but at least he had done something! To everyone’s amazement Benno also went – presumably for being punched! Even their side was gobsmacked. Unfortunately it was us who switched off and we gave away another before the break. The second half was a different story as we pushed forward relentlessly, hit bar and post and got two back through Laurie Carey and Ubong Umotong. We looked like getting the winner too but in a cruel twist the referee (!) intercepted Gavin Revell’s pass and headed it clear of our last defender for them to break and score in their only serious attack of the half. But I am not bitter.

Veterans Cup Round Three

Cambridge United 2 VILLAGE F.C. Vets 3

At last a quarterfinal place for the Vets. Against favourites Cambridge, who fielded some of their first team from last year, we started as if we knew what might be in store. Trevor Shields made several sharp saves. After twenty minutes though it was scoreless and we had a purple patch in which Dan Howard (2) and Dave Csondor gave us a three goal lead. The start of the second half mirrored the first only this time they scored – twice. After that though we held them quite comfortably for a well deserved victory.

Division One

VILLAGE F.C. ‘B’ 0 Wake Green 1

First half we were a bit slow to the ball in midfield (Rogers went off after 5 minutes). We had chances but so did they and I suppose they should have gone in 1 or perhaps 2 goals ahead.

Second half, apart from their penalty (Slightly dubious although this comes from Clifton who gave it away!) was all Village. Team showed a lot a determination and kept going and we should have had a couple but failed to register for the first time in a number of games.

Overall a battling performance but we missed players in midfield.

Good performances nearly all round including Griffin and Dicicco, but Man of the Match to C Griffin.

Division Four

FCS Lasermail 1 VILLAGE F.C. ‘D’ 2

A gutsy performance against the league leaders saw the Ds take all the points again. There was no score in the first half and in the second we played the better football. Eventually with 20 and 10 minutes to go we got the breakthrough and went 2-0 up. Tom Candish again was on top form and scored both. Lasermail only got back into it right at the end, getting a penalty with two minutes left.

VILLAGE F.C. 3 Ajax United 1

Not a bad result this one. The first twenty minutes, with Paddy nervous in goal on his season’s debut and our other defenders seemingly in dreamland, were a nightmare. As soon as we scored, however, through a nicely taken shot by Laurie Carey, there was only going to be one result. A defender put through his own goal from Dave Newton’s hard driven cross before long and by half time we were playing some nice passing football. Once we scored again – Paul Bennett from a long corner – we eased off and still created and yet missed further chances. Matt Baldwin was outstanding at the back.

Bill Hill Cup Round Two –

VILLAGE F.C. 'B' 0 Wake Green 'C' 2

Not the Bs most inspiring performance of the season. They went behind early on and by half time Wakes were two up. We had all the possession but looked nervous and panicked a little at times. Hopefully, though, only a blip in what has been a pretty impressive first half to the season.

Bill Hill Cup Round Two –

VILLAGE F.C. 'C' 2 Sutton United 'C' 1 (aet)

A gutsy yet uninspiring win against a determined Sutton side. Excellent early interplay between the midfield and forwards culminated in a deserved penalty (despatched neatly by Rob Dunford). The sending off of a Sutton defender soon after was the catalyst for our easing off the pedal, and their increase in effort. On a bobbly Row Heath pitch Sutton gradually edged back into the game and got a deserved equaliser direct from a corner (second half). Extra time beckoned. In fading light Martin Bell tucked away the winner (assisted by the dependable Rich Fryer) after an increased extra time Village effort. Quarter-finals next.

Top marks to Rob Kennedy who marshalled the troops excellently.

Division Four

Old Wulfrunians ‘D’ 2 VILLAGE F.C. ‘D’ 9

Well this is one Village team suddenly on fire and this win lifted them deservedly into the top half of the table. Excellent performances all round as we took a 3-1 half-time lead and then simply blew them away. Four goals for John Small, 2 more for Tom Candish, a scuffer from Phil Tompkins and one apiece for Mike Hardy and Dan Howard completed the rout. Only disappointment was seeing Steve Hughes chipped from the half-way line for their (thankfully not decisive) second goal.

This one turned out to be a bit of a thriller after a turgid first half in which one piece of slack defending saw us go one down, despite edging the play. Things got worse after the break when the referee gave an absurd penalty that even their guys looked embarrassed about. Three substitutions were made and in the end we just threw caution to the winds and in truth were better for it. Andy Campbell latched onto a Rich Munro through ball and slotted home, Rich himself crashed a header against the bar and then debutant Andy Harvey scuffed in the equaliser. If that seemed fortunate fortunes were reversed when Andy Harvey’s immaculate volley cannoned off the post. We were disappointed not to win but in the end grateful for having scrapped back for a point.

VILLAGE F.C. 1 Old Wulfrunians 2

Well the old Old Wulfs hoodoo struck again. After two minutes a superb move led to Steve Marfleet wriggling into the box only to be taken out. Unfortunately before the referee could blow he squared it where it was blasted not into the empty net but against the underside of the bar and out. It wasn't the only time we hit the woodwork in the game and it seemed typical of our luck that they went forward soon after and a harmless cross got a wicked deflection and in. We were stunned and after 20 minutes it got worse as a long range shot found its way home to put us two down. We had pulled one back before half-time through Dan Howard - again after good work from Steve Marfleet - but much as we pressed we couldn't get another. Old Wulfs' sheepish grins and sincere commiserations at the end showed they knew they had got out of jail but that's football!

Division One

Britannia Old Boys 1 VILLAGE F.C. 'B' 2

A competent performance from the B team to start the New Year off. As seems usual they soon went behind after 6 minutes after some slack defending allowed the Britannia player to charge through on and score a deflected goal. Village was under minimal pressure for the 1st 10 minutes but with team managed to blow away the Christmas cobwebs and started to get more into the game. With Village's 1st attack of sorts however they scored with Denley reacting well to some groundwork from Revell. Under difficult and very cold conditions the half ended at one a piece with Village superior footballing ability allowing them to get on top.

The 2nd half was pretty much all Village pressure and it appeared to be yet another one of those games as strikes by Denley, Nagle and the sub Dunford all going close. Even the comical moment of a Revell swing and a miss didn’t deter the Village players. All the pressure finally told with A Denley cross being headed (of sorts) by Dave Penfold. The ball seemed to take an age to cross the line and didn’t even have the energy to hit the back of the net.

Old Nortonians 3 VILLAGE F.C. 2

The month started much as January finished. This was a game we dominated far more than we had when we beat them 6-2 earlier in the season! Once again a bright start which culminated in Dave Newton slotting home from short range after 13 minutes. Further chances were spurned before we had one of those moments where every seems to doze off and an unmarked man slots one home. Minutes later Paul Bennett goes for a challenge, his knee gives way and unchallenged their midfielder bangs it in from 30 yards. The second half saw relentless pressure and it has to be said both good penalty shouts and more missed chances . Eventually we get on back through Matt Baldwin who smashes home a cross from Dan Howard. Surely we’ll go on to win? Surely they couldn’t score in the 90th minute with their second attack of the half?!!

Division One

Shirley Athletic 4 VILLAGE F.C. ‘B’ 1

A contender for the fastest goal of any season. Straight from the Village kick-off Village handed the ball to Shirley and one kick upfield left a one on one with the substitute keeper who was soundly beaten. One down after less than 20 seconds! However after that Village dominated much of the play without really threatening to break through. Shirley were limited to a few long range efforts and the half ended with Village in the ascendancy

Village started were they left of, but the inability to score proved to be their undoing. Another ball through the centre and although keeper Forbes and defender Williams sought to reach the ball, unsurprisingly the Shirley forward proved quicker and it was 2-0. This soon became 3-0 as Shirley pressed forward their advantage. Hope was raised by David Penfold reacting well to a break in the Shirley defence to score a deserved goal. However any attempts of a Man City like recovery were soon dashed by Forbes having a David James moment in goal and gifting Shirley their 4th.

Man of the Match was run close by early substitute Graham Chapman, but the award goes to Mike Stimpson.

Holder Cup Quarter Final

Sutton United ‘D’ 2 VILLAGE F.C. ‘D’ 1 (after extra time - score at 90 mins 1-1)

A grave disappointment this. A morning call-off of the neighbouring first team pitch led to Sutton fielding a much stronger team than normal, including first team marksperson, Nat ‘Karate Kid’ Jackson. Despite this the Ds gave a very good account of themselves and had the better of the game and the chances. They couldn’t find the net, however, and with 5 minutes to go Sutton took the lead through Jackson. The Ds haven’t had such a fine season without showing resolve, however, and a 40 yard volley from Matt Green evened things out. Finally as time ticked away and 120 minutes showed on the clock, Sutton got a second from a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Handsworth have beaten our betes noires Sutton three times this season, they are pressing for the title and yet this week we really turn someone over. Playing with great tempo (my word of the month!) we took the lead through Dave Newton’s 30 yard chip over the keeper and could have had a hatful by half-time as Ubong Umotong crucified them with his pace and we passed it better than I had seen all season. They did pull level in the second half but only for a minute or two and two more from Dave Newton and Steve Marfleet followed and their was even time for Laurie Carey to lob it wide of an empty net.

Junior Cup Round Three

VILLAGE F.C. ‘B’ 3 Handsworth G.S.O.B. ‘B’ 0

Finally some reward for Village 2nds. A much deserved and needed victory. With the return of James Cullis the defence were able to heave a huge sigh of relief. With this confidence Village were able to display their footballing ability. After some initial sparring Village were able to dominate play and it came as no surprise when in the 30th minute, leading scorer Howard Rogers, after good work by Rob Dunford, beautifully chipped the keeper to give Village a 1-0 advantage at the half.

The 2nd half took on a similar pattern to the 1st, but Village didn’t make their superiority pay. They were thankful to Cullis making a game turning point save midway through the half. This seemed to deflate HSGOB and Rob Dunford got his just reward for some good work throughout the game by getting 2 goals in the final 5 minutes. The 2nd, he says, was a delightful chip. Others say fluke!

Man of the Match for his 2nd good game on the run to Graham Chapman.

Division Two

Well it was a record that was bound to fall sometime. Rowheath has been a fortress for the Cs since way back last season (and they are due back a few more times before the season ends) and most of the Division Three and now Two title contenders have gone away pointless. This time their pace up front proved too much and the better side on the day won. Andy Campbell netted our goals.

A penalty from Aramyees regained a two goal lead after they had pulled one back but the pressure came back on in the last ten minutes after we conceded a penalty. Veterans Cup Quarter-Final

Queslett Park Rangers 1 VILLAGE F.C. Veterans 3

For the first twenty minutes it looked as if they might play us of the park and they took an early lead. However, once we pulled one back they lost their discipline, tried to slug it out (with Lenny in our side!) and stopped playing football. Village didn’t help themselves early on by giving the ball away in silly positions and from one of these situations QPR scored from a well-taken free kick. Village however slowly began to asset themselves and after 30 minutes a Sid Khan free kick was flicked on by Junior Forbes and Andy Campbell ‘claimed’ the goal. 1-1 at the half

Now with the wind Village started to have lots more of the play and evidently began to frustrate the QPR players with their tenacity and skilful play. The goal to take Village in front however came from a long punt upfield from Dan Howard, which caused an unusual amount of panic between keeper and defender. With Dave Csondor bearing down on them the defender headed it into his own net.

With 20 minutes to go the game got a lot meatier and QPR attempted to bully Village out. However the defence held firm and apart from a shot that struck the post, QPR never really threatened. Late substitute Louis Belcuore was wrestled to the ground and Bob Jefford dispatched the spot kick and sent the Vets into our fourth semi-final of the season.

Great performances all round, especially to Man of the Match Mark Fisher.

Unfortunately we never had to get out of first gear to win this one (and we didn’t!). Ubong should have had six (but settled for two) and Laurie Carey three but it was Paul Wilson who netted the third. Good to see Tony Dicicco back playing and a good full debut for Mark Sumner.

Division One

VILLAGE F.C. ‘B’ 2 Old Wulfrunians ‘B’ 1

On a day when all sides were stretched for players, it didn’t help when Geggs limped off after 18 minutes and a win seemed unlikely given our 3-0 defeat away to Old Wulfs earlier in the season. However, we started brightly and after a few good openings scored after twenty minutes when good work on the right saw the ball crossed for Tweedie to slot in from 6 yards. We allowed Old Wulfs to draw level just before the break when a long throw wasn't cleared and their striker smashed home from 5 yards.

The second half was fairly even but we managed to get the better of it with a goal from Phil Newland - on for Geggs - after some great individual play by Dunford. Chances came and went at both ends and Old Wulfs had a header ruled out for a push on Rogers with 5 to go. A good battling performance by everybody involved with man of the match going to Rob Dunford.

Division Four

A creditable performance with weakened side, shaken further by early injuries and congrats to Saul Gray who got on for 50 minutes.

Eccleston stuck to football this time, which was a bad mistake given the Es’ explosion of form. The second half was the most dreary and inept game we have ever taken part in but eventually Nick Longley added his second - this time with his head after hitting the bar from 10 centimetres out.

Junior Cup Semi-Final

Sutton United 'B' 1 - VILLAGE F.C. 'B' 2

Another good performance from Village 2nds. Proving to be very solid at the start of the game with Vaughan and Rogers in particular bossing the midfield. Stimpson and Dunford were continually breaking free of the slow Sutton defence but the final pass or shot was not quite effective enough.

The opening goal finally came from a Nagle corner and mirroring the semi-final from last year the keeper dropped the ball at the feet of a grateful Carl Griffin who smacked the ball home.

Even though clearly hobbling Nagle still contributed significantly to the overall play of village and just before the end of the half Nick Vaughan found himself with acres of space to smash home the second.

The second half petered out but with Sutton not really having much to offer and the defence marshalled excellently by Richard Hadley were able to keep the opposition at bay.

Sutton managed a last minute consolation but were unable to prevent Village going back to defend their trophy against Wake Green - again.

Good performance all round, especially a hobbling Nagle, Dunford, Stimpson, Rogers and Hadley. However the man of the match goes to Nick Vaughan.

This was a very poor performance against a mediocre Ajax side. In the first half we were too sluggish (not enough people taking training seriously) and got what we deserved - nothing. Despite this and a rally towards the end when it no longer mattered the poorest performance of the season.

Division One

VILLAGE F.C. 'B' 1 Brittanic Assurance 1

Another solid performance from Village 2nds. Although not quite reaching the same cutting edge as the previous weeks they made life very difficult for the Brittanic players who had initially took control of the midfield. In one of their rare excursions up field Mike Stimpson latched onto a Bain throw in and he proved that he can score when the ball is around the 6-yard area. As last week, Village were breaking free of the slow Brittanic defence but the final pass or shot was not quite effective enough.

Like Manchester United they were made to pay for this when a Brittanic corner was given several opportunities to be cleared and when it wasn’t they took their chance gleefully. One all at the half.

The second half petered out into a scrappy affair with neither side never really looking like scoring that all-important winning goal.

Webasto 2 VILLAGE Sunday 2

A spirited performance, which deserved better from the boys. In a scratch team Village Sundays welcomed back P Cypher, Dan Atkins, G Marshall and unfortunately (?) couldn’t play Quinny in goal and J Forbes had to deputise. This however didn’t stop the skilful Cypher creating constant danger for the opposition and from a free-kick won Dan Atkins curled one in. The defence held firm, but were unable to stop the wily forwards of Webasto getting an equaliser in the last 10 minutes of the half.

The second half produced an even more determined rearguard presented by the whole of the Village team and another Dan Atkins free-kick resulted in Village taking the lead again. Going uphill and against the wind, and with a referee seemingly not doing the team any favours, it seemed they might just register a much-deserved victory. However in the 96th minute an excellent cross was helped in the make the score 2-2 with the last kick of the game.

No matter how gutting this was, it was possibly one of the finest all round displays by the Village Sundays all season with all 13 men producing an excellent team performance.

Veterans Cup Semi-Final

VILLAGE F.C. 2 Wale Green 2 (a.e.t.)

A breathless classic this one. They dominated early on and took the lead in controversial circumstances when Laurie Carey headed past his own keeper after the whistle had clearly already blown for a foul. Gradually we worked our way back and Sid Khan's corners in particular troubled Wakes. Eventually Laurie Carey headed home from a Bob Jefford corner on the left. The early part of the second half saw us constantly under the cosh but Tony Dicicco excelled himself between the sticks. The last few minutes of ordinary time saw us hit both posts and Mark Fisher, excellent throughout, head one off our line. When Dan Howard put Bob Jefford away and his cross was superbly headed home by Junior Forbes 10 minutes into extra time there looked only one winner but a defensive slip let them back in and despite some bizarre goalmouth scrambles at their end we couldn't force a winner. Dave Csondor another he merits a mention in dispatched but we have it all to do again in the replay.

Now this could be important as we strive to wrest third place after a poor start to the season. We completed the double in this game and were certainly helped by the opposition getting a man sent off after 20 minutes for a stupid challenge. By then Rich Hadley had headed home in bizarre fashion and the sending came off after their man sent Ubong sprawling as he broke free of him - the last defender. Ubes put the penalty away coolly and repeated the dose when strangely asked to retake it. They actually played better with ten men and into the fierce gale which threatened to ruin the game. WE went to sleep early in the second half and then had to press again for what seemed the clincher with 15 minutes to go, nice finish from Laurie Carey. We even let them get another back - silly penalty - but certainly deserved the three points

This game was a bit of a farce in the winds however after a relatively poor first half we played well into the wind in the second half and could have had 3 or 4.

Revell set up Tweedie for the opener right on the stroke of half time with a flick on from a Nagle long throw. They then equalised with their first attack of the second half when a thunderbolt of a shot came back off the post to their striker, who proceeded to tap in from 8 yards. This was a farcical game in the gale but we certainly deserved the points. Tom Candish scored first and, playing with the wind, at half-time it was 1-0 to us. A last minute goal form Phil Kyei snatched the points at the death.

Division Four

Parkfield Amateurs 'B' 1 VILLAGE F.C. 'D' 4

Against the wind and with 20 minutes to go we still found ourselves 1-0 down as we were at half-time, although we had hit the bar in the second minute of the second half. It was a John Denley penalty that got us back level and five minutes later John Small made it 2-1. With 5 minutes left John Symcox rounded the keeper and John Small finished it off, just leaving John Symcox time to get one himself and put the Ds into 4th place in the table.

Division Eight

Wulfurn Invicta 0 VILLAGE F.C. 'E' 2

A steady enough display to take three points home from Bantock Park.

VILLAGE F.C. SUNDAY 2 West Park 0

A great result for the Sunday team this week in their relegation dogfight against West Park, but it was put into perspective by a nasty injury to manager James Cypher. An accidental clash of heads resulted in a double fracture of the cheekbone and James was on his way to hospital. All the sunday team and I'm sure everyone else at Village wish James a speedy recovery and good luck for the operation early next week to make him even more beautiful than he was before.

Village had the wind behind us in a tight first half. Some good build up play and two excellent opportunist goals for Dan Whyborn and Manager James sent us in 2-0 at half time, also thanks to a couple of good saves from stand in keeper Alan Moat. The second half brought more pressure from West Park with the wind behind them, but Village stood firm with some excellent defending. Down to only 10 men for the last 15 minutes after James was injured, there was no way we were going to throw it away.

The latest league table shows that we have moved up to next to bottom in the league. The upshot is a win in our final game will guarantee that we finish third bottom at worst by overtaking Westpark who have played all their games and are 2 points ahead.

VILLAGE F.C. 4 Globe Newtown 1

A supposedly under-strength Village side played their best football of the season against a talented but rather disorganised Globe side, whose enthusiasm waned when it became apparent they were in for a trousering. Wierdly there was no score at half-time when we had totally dominated the half. The second was more even and they had moments of pressure but the result was hardly in doubt after centroampista Dave Newton headed superbly home form a Carson Tweedie cross and moments later Dave returned the compliment for Carson to notch from close range. Rich Hadley doubled his goal tally for the season following a scramble and although they got one back, we chalked up a tally of 4 hits on the woodwork before substitute Rob Dunford rounded off the scoring.

Veterans Cup Semi-Final Replay

Wake Green Amateurs 4 VILLAGE F.C. Vets 0

So our four semi-finals have yielded only one final - disappointing - as was this performance from a below par Vets side. Two-nil down early on we had our moments but when Junior Forbes bustled aside the more competent to take our penalty chance to get back in we were doomed. Junior has a long record of penalty misses and this was no exception, although at only six feet over the bar it was closer than most.

Division Two

Handsworth G.S.O.B. 'B' 1 VILLAGE F.C. 'C' 1

Not the best display of the season by a much changed but good enough side to have expected all three points. One-nil down at half-time it was left to substitute Carl Griffin to win a 70th minute penalty which John Denley dispatched with aplomb.

Division Four

VILLAGE F.C. 'D' 2 Parfield Amateurs 'B' 0

Deja vu for the Ds and three more points. After 20 minutes John Symcox bobbled one over the prone custodian to give us a half-time lead and symmetry was assured when with 20 minutes left Jon Millard (do you have to be called John to score for this team?) aimed a cross for two men on the far post, hit it too hard and was delighted to see it hit the net high inside the far post.
