One of my favourite artistes. I find that she has got the boldest
attitude towards the flexibility of HongKong pop music which has gained
itself an undeserving stereotype of 'just mush' among some circles of listeners
I know. Check out her latest album at mikemike.com (link below) and
see what I mean. Besides this, she has got a stronger voice with
a unique quality of its own (I can almost recognise it now even without
listening to the particular song before). I like the way she packs
ooomph!!! in her music. More disco music please!!!

His slow songs don't appeal to me. Somehow, his voice sounds to me
like he's singing in the wrong octave and one time, he held a note for
so long in a monotone I thought the recording on the disc must have gone
awry. Nevertheless, my friends think that he's fantastic (guess it's
just my ears) and say that my opinion is warped because of my so-called
abnormal taste (I really like Eminem, Limp Bizkit, LMF, Aerosmith and Whitehouse
all of which they really don't like).
But I do
like his fast songs on his latest album (again check them out at mikemike
below and hear some RAP *YeOw!*), brave and successful breaks away
from the 'stereotype'.

I read in a magazine that she got the most unpopular songstress award.
I can't imagine WHY?!?! She has got one of the best voices on the
music scene (I'm not kidding when I say this) with a wide and varied vocal
range, going from low deep and sultry to highs which do not suddenly go
out of tune from out of breath. Her latest album is a unique prize
on its own. She has included a completely different rhythm in her
music (sounds a bit tribal and chanting) with a different attitude towards
lyrics, taking on a third person or second-person narrative at times.
Her music is literally LITERATURE!!! Good for her!!

E.T.: I
don't like his music. Too slow and predictable and his voice doesn't
blend with the background music. Guess I haven't heard some of his
better songs. But photogenity is A+++++++++!!!

Little Voice:
He's got one of the most flexible voices I have ever heard. Sounding
excellent in both slow, medium and fast music, adapting to both R&B
and angst-ridden songs perfectly. I think his song 'instinct' in
'believe in love' (Cantonese, first version) is really well done.
I have so far not failed to like any of his albums. Even if the lyrics
are predictable and typical, he pulls it off anyway with catching background
melody and his voice. I am not a fan of his but when it comes to
the production of a new album, his is one which I will definitely not fail
to consider buying. Oh, I forgot to mention. Check out his
fifth track in his latest Cantonese album (ni(3) jiao(1) wo(3) liang(3)
du(4)), it's got a bit of Aboriginal tribal beat in some bits of it.
And what can I say?! That track is one FUNKY!! song!! (makes me wanna
DANCE!! or just bob your head silly).

He cut his
first album when I was beginning teenagehood. I was initially stuck
on his music because of his looks (the wrong way to listen to music because
you're using your eyes instead). And finally growing tired of his
weak voice (my friend used to lisp him in a very high-pitched sing-song)
some time in the past, stopped listening to his music for quite a while.
What I didn't realise was that he had improved and was continually improving.
On top of being one of the best dancers, he's got one of the most distinctive
voices on the scene. His voice sounds more natural (not unaturally
high-pitched) and it definitely sounds excellent now. I wouldn't
tire of listening to it now. I HAVE beat my record of one month listening
to the same CD, and nothing else sooo.....

I never heard any of his songs until around the beginning of this year,
but with all the hoo haa going around about how good his music is, I guess
I'd better have a listen. I must say that I prefer this type of music
to the usual piano playing and guitar. I much rather prefer the sound
of ELECTRIC guitars screaming in the background. With all the promotion
by my friends, I thought he was going to be predictable and boring, but
no!! He's got a different style and his voice does go well with it.
The music has definitely grown on me. I have listened to it for ages
and am not SICK yet. For those tired of the watery kind of music,
you got to listen to his album (okay some slow ones). Check out Zui(4)
Ren(2) at mikemike and gai(3) zao(4) and be impressed!!
For those
who don't have a shred of Cantonese, it's not a problem. I don't
understand a word he's singing but he sounds good so it's really something.
Some little tips on trying out new
music.

When it
comes to evaluation, mikemike's got the stuff. Listen to their mp3s
for 24 hours till your speakers die and then consider buying the albums.
It's better than standing at my local CD shop where I stood trying desperately
to listen to Alex To's CD only to be shooed away without forming any idea
about whether I like it. So I walked away from the sale, only to
realise later after listening to the CD from mikemike.com that I really
wanted it but it was already back to normal price!! AAARGH!!
