HOW TO HEAR THE VOICE OF GOD

You can be transformed by God's presence in your life if you will be determined to listen to Him.

  1. Get on God's wavelength. When you approach the Word of God, it's important that you are on the same wavelength in order for you to understand the truth in what is being revealed. You need to listen spiritually instead of with worldly ears. Nicodemus was a good example of a man who listened only with worldly ears as he asked how a person could be born again of his mother's womb.

  2. Learn to listen. The inability to listen is one of the basic causes for relationship difficulties - earthward and heavenward. Though God speaks to your spirit, you must comprehend what He has said with your mind and emotions and respond with your will. Those determined to listen will be amazed at what they actually hear.

  3. Realize God wants to talk to you. He loves to answer your cry to Him. As you learn the art of listening - believing that God wants to communicate to you personally - you will hear the voice of God and be transformed by what you hear Him say to you.

  4. Cultivate quietness. It is God's promise that if you will be quiet you will know Him (Ps. 46:10). There is more to quietness than an absence of external noise. It is the cessation of frantic thoughts and pursuits, insatiable desires, and selfish motivations.

  5. Mediate on the Word. This means taking the time to ponder at length a verse or passage from Scriptures. This will help you understand the way God thinks, His principles, and His attitude toward sin, as well as His love for the sinner. You will become familiar with God's vocabulary, and learn what He expects you to do in order to please Him.

  6. Ask God questions. Instead of asking others what is meant by Scripture, you can go to the author Himself. He will give you understanding - through other verses - by the power of His Holy Spirit.

  7. Anticipate hearing God speak. It is the spirit-filled believer who has the greatest potential for hearing God's voice. Hearing is a result of a relationship cultivated with God.

  8. Respond to what you hear. After you have heard God, it's imperative that you obey what He has said. The Scriptures are meant to be obeyed, not just meditated upon.

  9. Look for confirmation. If you feel you have gained an insight into the scriptures, you need to be willing to let it be judged by other Scriptures as well as by other men and women of God who know how to hear His voice.

  10. Remember His words. Once you have received prophetic words remember what God has promised to do when He spoke those words to you.
