MONEY - TEACH YOUR CHILDREN LIFE-LONG LESSONS
By discipling your children in the art of handling their
finances, you not only give them practical skills, you have a
wonderful opportunity to impress upon them the values of the
Lord. One of the most important skills you can offer your
children is the understanding that wealth is a tool to be used
for God's glory rather than for our own gratification.
Begin by getting your own house in order. Then teach by example.
Five questions you need to help your child answer:
- Where does money come from? Let your children know that you
work hard for your salary. Talk to them about allowances,
working for income around the house, and the importance of
doing some chores without pay because it's a family
responsibility (1 Cor. 29:11-12).
- Why do we tithe? Giving faithfully to the Lord's work is an
essential part of every Christian's life, but giving away
money doesn't come naturally to most people. We need to learn
that God owns everything, and it is our responsibility to
give back to Him a portion of what He has so generously given
us (2 Cor. 9:6-7).
How do we save money? Open a small bank account for your
child and help him or her save money regularly. They'll soon
learn the joy of watching their savings grow, and they'll
have a skill they can use the rest of their lives (Prov.
22:7).
- Who are we called to help? God doesn't give us money solely
for our own selfish pleasure, but so that we can experience
the grace of giving. The Bible is clear that those who have
been blessed with much are required to give much. Ask your
children to help you decide where to give money. Who needs it
most? What are the best organizations and causes that need
your support? By becoming involved with some Christian
ministries, your child's heart is opened to the needs of a
lost world (Prov. 3:9-10).
- Where does the money go? If you teach your children how to
create a budget, comparison-buy, and control impulse
spending, you'll give them important skills in life. You will
also help them to keep focused on the Lord, rather than on
the latest advertisements, and prepare them to stay away from
one of the biggest snares in marriage: fighting over money
(Prov. 21:20).
- How do I keep records of my finances? Let your children see
where you spend your money and why, and they'll develop a
whole new appreciation for what you go through each month (1
Cor. 4:2).
