To say I've had a varied past would be an understatement… Polynesian dancer, receptionist, administrative manager, executive secretary, inside sales rep, office manager, and now author of a new book, Fruit-The Ripe Pick (Fruit Selection Made Easy!). The diversity in my life continues as I venture into uncharted and exciting venues with the successful completion and publication of my first title.
I was born and raised on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, with a cultural heritage as diverse as my career. I love to read and consider it one of my favorite hobbies, but never dreamed I would become a writer. Things changed in 1997, when, as a long-time fruit lover, I got tired of bringing home dry, mealy, tasteless fruit from the market. I just didn't know how to pick out the best among all the possible choices, so much variety of color, size, shape, and texture! I tried to mimic the other shoppers I observed choosing fruit, but had little success. I wondered if any of them shared my predicament… Thus the seed for a book was planted in my mind.
As an avid reader, I quickly discovered that a user-friendly, quick-reference guide to selecting fruit was not readily available to consumers. After three years of research and practice, I finally mastered the secrets of quality fruit selection, and began to write Fruit-The Ripe Pick to share this newfound knowledge with all others.
Completing this book became my goal and passion. I poured my heart and soul into this project. I was employed full-time as an office manager, so wrote and researched at nights and on weekends. My supportive husband and family encouraged me through each step of my journey, so I can honestly say this book is the sweet fruit of many people's labor, especially that of my older brother.
My brother and I have always shared a special bond as siblings. Maybe it's because we're the two eldest in the family or that we share the same birthday exactly two years apart, or possibly because we think alike on so many issues. After all these years, I still can't explain the bond we share, except to know that it's there. In 1984, a serious, life-changing motorcycle accident left him with a lot of free time on his hands, so I enlisted his help with research. He spent untold hours on the Internet examining and comparing sites, and gathering facts and information. I spent the next year writing and re-writing in my free time, and he was always willing to help.
From personal experience, I knew this information was needed "out there." My research had already revealed that no comparable book was available in the marketplace. I intuitively knew that if I could get my idea successfully into print, many would find it a valuable and useful resource.
While I worked on the book, I envisioned a handy, pocket-sized reference guide with a colorful, appealing cover and an easy-to-read, clear, and concise format that would educate, entertain, and appeal to readers from all walks of life. Now that
Fruit-The Ripe Pick has finally completed its journey to publication, I hope it will teach you how to select the most delicious fresh fruit every time you shop. It is especially designed to save you both time and money. May you get as much enjoyment from tasting the "fruits" of your newfound knowledge, as I got from sharing this information with you, my readers.
Aloha, Mei-Lin
