FAQs

Q. When buying collectibles--do I ask if the item comes in its original package?

A. Yes! Items in their original packaging are worth more--items that come with documentation is even better. Make sure the outer package is not too much damaged. Most collectors will want the packaging if you want to sell the item later.

Q. Can an item in bad condition be repaired and sold for more than its value?

A. Any item can be repaired but the value comes in mint condition items that have not been modified or repaired to cover damage. Be watchful of items with visible cracks, glue lines, etc. Check value guides before buying any big ticket item and know average prices before you buy!

Q. What tools are needed for vintage/collectibles hunting?

A. The best advice is to pack a beach bag with towels; bottled water; tools for taking apart or putting together large pieces; a pricing guide to antiques/salvage items--check any bookstore; rope; plastic bags for small items with pieces; and last but not least a change of clothes. Some salvage stores are very dirty and dusty. Wear old clothes and enjoy digging through items from yesteryear.

Q. What if I am not sure of an item's value?

A. Any good bookstore--Barnes & Noble, Borders, your local library--will have a guide to
antique & collectible pricing
. Make sure the copyright date is the current year. In next month's issue we will list some
