Emerged coast results from a fall in sea level and/or an uplift of the land.

Erosion is the wearing away and removal of loose material.

Estuary is the shallow, lower part of a river (mouth) where salt water mixes with fresh water due to sea level rise.

Fault is a fracture or crack in the earth’s crust caused by the movement of rocks.

Fetch is the area of sea over which wind blows to form waves.

Fjord is a long, narrow, steep sided inlet formed by the drowning of a glaciated valley.  

Gloup see ’blowhole’.

Groin is a wooden construction built across a beach used to trap sand and reduce beach erosion.

Headland is an outcropping tongue of hard rock.

High water mark is the highest level on a beach reached by waves and tides.

Hydraulic action is the sheer power of running water wearing away the bed of a river or sea floor.

Isostatic readjustment is the process by which the earth’s crust is kept in equilibrium.

Jetty is a man made structure projecting into the sea.  It is used to prevent sediment deposition at the mouth of beaches/ harbours.
