Title:
The Comparative Study of Coastal Activities.
Location: Marsaxlokk,
Zurrieq and Bugibba
Aims:
To investigate the activities being held in coastal areas.
To compare the activities of the different coastal areas.
Equipment:
Maps of the three areas
Camera
Record sheets
Method:
Prepare
a record sheet with a list of features indicating the activities found in
each location. Here is an
example:
Location:____________
Date:_______________
Feature |

Go
on site and walk very close to the coast.
Observe all the features associated with coastal activities.
Use the tallying method to record them.
Visit
all the three sites and repeat the same activity in each locality.
You
can take pictures of the indicators to include in your report.
When
you have gathered all the primary data, proceed with your analysis.
These
questions might help you:
Concluding from your tallying, what is the main coastal activity in
each location?
Try to explain why one activity is more dominant than the others in
particular coastal areas?
Are there any areas that have a combination of dominant activities?
Do you think that this can lead to problems or do you think this
can be a positive thing?
Make a list of the bad and good effects that occur due to this
combination of activities.
Conclusion:
Present all the data and analysis in a report.
Further tips:
Be careful for bias while tallying.
Use the same procedure for all coastal areas under study because
otherwise they could not be compared.
Always include a map of Malta indicating the areas you studied.
In your analysis, avoid drawing conclusions from what you think
only: be scientific as much as possible!
Recommendations:
For this fieldwork Marsaxlokk, Zurrieq and Bugibba have been chosen because they are amongst the principal coastal areas of Malta; they serve different purposes and are situated on different parts of the Maltese Coast.
If you would like to choose other sites make sure that they have a variety of activities going on like agricultural, recreational, residential, industrial and historical sites etc.
