a)     Study the cross section of a coastline (below)

i)       State:

1.             The height above sea level of raised beach B;

2.           The width of the present beach and wave-cut platform.

ii)  With reference to examples, explain what is meant by 1. igneous rocks; 2. metamorphic rocks shown on the diagram.

iii) With the help of labeled diagrams and using the information given explain the formation of two of the features shown on the cross section.

i)                   Name one example.

ii)                Describe and explain its formation and features.

a) 1.  Name a small area in which you have carried out a fieldwork.

2.  Draw a sketch map of this area and add an appropriate scale.

b)  State the purpose of your study.

c)  Give an explanatory account of the methods used to carry out your fieldwork mentioning any precautions which were necessary.

d)  Choose two of the following techniques which are frequently used to present the results of field studies:

transects; pie charts; bar charts; flowline maps; land-use maps; annotated field sketches.

With the aid of diagrams, explain how and why your chosen techniques may be used.

i)                   barchan and wadi

ii)                drumlin and corrie

iii)              waterfall and levee

iv)               ria and raised beach.  

For each pair, explain with the aid of diagrams how they have been formed, naming examples or specific areas in which they may be found.

Study the figure below, which is a field sketch of a small stretch of coastline.

a)     Explain why the cliffs formed of chalk and limestone are higher than those formed of sands and clays.

b)    Explain the formation of the ridge on the shingle beach.
