Access Keys

Access Keys
Shortcuts or access keys can be used, if your browser supports this feature. To use these shortcuts, press the ALT key on your keyboard and the assigned alpha or numeric character simultaneously, then press the "Enter" key. You can then use the "Tab" key to navigate through the page.

How the Access Keys work, as well as which keys are used, differ between browsers. For example, Internet Explorer uses ALT M. Another browser may use a different key altogether.

The Canada Site has three menu bars. The common and institutional menus are placed at the top of each page, and the side menu is placed to the left of each page. Three Access Key shortcuts have been placed at the top of each page, right after the federal identifier and the Canada word mark. These Access Keys have been enabled mainly for use with screen readers and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

  • Access Key M - (shortcut ALT+M) brings you to the start of the common menu bar at the top of the page. Tab once to go to the other language button, tab twice to go to the "Contact Us" button etc.
  • Access Key 1 - (shortcut ALT+1) skips the common and institutional menu bars (both top bars) and brings you directly to the side menu.
  • Access Key 2 - (shortcut ALT+2) skips both the top and the side menus and brings you directly to the content of the pages.

Consistency throughout the Canada Site (canada.gc.ca) has been maintained. The same shortcuts have been assigned to all Web pages containing form elements (i.e. text area or text boxes to type in your input, dropdown lists, radio buttons and check boxes, submit and reset buttons).
