The hugely experienced central defender’s CV reads like a who’s who of top European clubs: FC Porto, Parma, FC Barcelona and now S.S. Lazio have all appreciated the value of the cultured defender, who has also starred for Famaliçao and Clube Académica de Coimbra.

Fernando Couto’s list of club honours is equally glittering: he has won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup with both Barcelona and Lazio, the UEFA Cup with Parma, a UEFA Super Cup, a league title and a Spanish cup with Barça, as well as three league titles with Porto.

At international level, as well as being among a select band of Portuguese players to win in excess of 60 caps, Couto won the World Youth Cup with Portugal in 1989 and appeared as part of the rock-solid Portugal defence that impressed at EURO 96 and 2000.

He is very strong in the air, but also an excellent reader of the game and an accomplished man-marker, and was a stalwart in the Portuguese defence for most of the 1990’s after making his debut alongside goalkeeper Vitor Baía in a friendly aginst the USA in 1990.
