South Africa will be hoping for a strong performance to strengthen their bid as the first African country to host a World Cup. However, if Mali 2002 is a useful guide it seems that they have slipped a little down the pecking order of African Nations. The experience of France 98 could help some of the players at this level so they should not be written off, but some improvement is neccessary if they are to pass into the knockout stages.
