Left in the morning for Colditz. Germany is suffering from a heat wave of Wagnerian proportions.I spare a thought for the person who invented air conditioning. Bless him.We arrive at Colditz in the early afternoon and check in at Pension Albertberg. It´s just too hot to walk around so we go for a beer in the restaurant Zur Post. We also go for dinner there as Colditz isn´t exactly known for it´s bustling night life. But then,it shouldn´t be, so we spend a very pleasant evening in the garden of pension Albertberg with a bottle of East German bubbly.(For the connoisseurs amongst you….a bottle of “Rotkäpchen”..not exactly my taste but believe me..it is an East German classic,so therefore…)

We have breakfast at 9 am and then head for the castle. It´s already a lovely day but also very hot…and that´s only the beginning.A large group of people gather at the entrance of the castle. They turn out to be English. Renate Lipmann will be the tour guide for today. The whole castle is being renovated since last year and although the results look good ,the atmosphere is gone. The only reason Colditz is famous, is for it´s recent history i.e. it´s function as a Prisoner of War camp in WW2. That´s in 99% of cases, the reason why people go to Colditz. But according to some strange law in Germany, they have to restore the castle to it´s former glory. In reality that means that for example all graffiti in the solitary confinement cells has been painted over. The former” kommandantur” will become a youth hostel. It´s a shame really that nothing more is done to preserve all WW2 traces. But I can go on for ever. Judge for yourselves with the photos. These were taken by Andrea, my girlfriend and my father as I was handling the videocamera
