General Information

Courtesy Transfers

Viva Safaris operates a courtesy shuttle service. Confirmation is made from our booking offices.

Airport Transfers

These can be arranged on request at checkpoint.

Transport to and from the River

Transport to and from the river is provided by viva in safari vehicles (4 x4).

Clientele

Rafting is suitable for most clients. The ability to swim is not essential, but non-swimmers are advised to inform the guides at the briefing.

Age Restrictions

Minimum age is set at 15 years. There is no set maximum age, however VIVA may retain the right to refuse a client whom it may feel is not capable.

Booking Restrictions

Minimum passengers for a single trip are as follows:-

All Rafting trips 2 passengers Private trips 5 passengers Overnights 4 passengers

Walk-in Walk-out

The walk-in walkout from the gorge is steep and rocky. The walkout is equivalent to climbing a 70-storey building. Clients will carry their buoyancy aids and helmets. Porters carry all other rafting equipment. There are plenty of places to rest on the way up and there is a refreshment stop half way up. Refreshments are served at the top too.

Oar / Paddle Boat

At certain water levels, clients are given the option between an "oar boat " and "paddle boat ". An " oar boat " is controlled and maneuvered by the guide using oars from the middle of the raft. Clients are seated in the front and rear of the raft and hold on to the safety line around the perimeter of the raft. A " paddle boat " requires the clients to actively participate in maneuvering the raft through the rapids and calm stretches. Clients are seated around the perimeter of the boat and uses paddles but do not hold on to the safety line.

What to wear

  • Swimming costumes
  • shorts and T-shirts
  • Rafting sandals or sneakers/trainers
  • Sunscreen lotion
  • Spectacles / sunglasses must have straps
  • Additional clothing left for safekeeping will be available at the top of the gorge at the and of the trip.
  • All valuables, jewelry & passports must be left at the hotel for safekeeping
  • Warm clothes are advised for multi-day clients (June to August )
  • Equipment

All rafting clients are issued with adjustable buoyancy aid and helmet at the beginning of the trip. Wet suit tops are available for rafting clients during colder months.
