MAPHIS FAMILY OF VIRGINIA

(Originally MEVIUS, MAFIUS, MAVIUS, MAVIS -- German Origin)

SURNAME HISTORY

The family is of German origin and our original ancestor came
direct from the Palatinate or south Germany thru the port of Philadelphia
in 1737. It is believed that George Mavis was the son
of a German immigrant who settled in Pennsylvania and moved to the
Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Thus, our first ancestor was among one of the
earlier settlers in the northwest section of the Shenandoah Valley
around the Pugh Run area.

JOHANNES MEVIUS

arrived in Pennsylvania in 1737 on the (1) ST. ANDREW GALLEY
and signed the Oath of Allegience on September 26, 1737. It is believed that Johannes is the first progenitor of the Maphis family. Johannes Mevius and Johannes Wisman arrived on the same ship and both were in the Shenandoah Valley, VA at the same time.
