Virginia Men's Club Tennis League

FOUNDED-
Spring 2001

CONCEPT-
The Virginia Men's Club Tennis League is an organization of college club tennis teams that compete against each other throughout the fall and spring semesters. At the end of the spring semester the top team is chosen via a tournament, and that team receives the league trophy. That team holds the trophy until the next champion team is crowned the following year. The champion team is allowed to engrave their school's name and year on the plaque at the base of the trophy.

JOINING-
Teams that wish to join the league must be voted on by the original four teams: Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, James Madison University, and William and Mary. The team that is holding the trophy at the time of the vote receives two votes; the other three teams receive one.

RULES-
-Membership to each club team is decided by the individual club's constitution.
-Members may not currently be a member of their school's varsity team.
-Each team in the league must play the other teams once per semester.
-Match format may be configured just prior to the match.
-Both teams prior to the match must agree upon the match format. Make sure, however, that there are an odd number of matches played, in order to avoid a tie.
-Suggested format consists of numbers 1-6 playing singles and doubles. Eight game pro-sets are the format for doubles matches. A twelve-point tiebreaker is played at eight all. The three doubles matches play first. The team that wins two out of the three (or all three) gets one point. Following the doubles the six singles matches play. Single matches are two out of three set matches, with a standard twelve-point tiebreaker. Singles matches are worth one point each.
-The team that wins the most points/matches wins the overall match-up.

TOURNAMENT-
-It is up to the teams in the league to schedule one match per semester against the other teams in the league. Location of the match should alternate per semester.
-Scores of each match should be reported through the league web-site to the web site administrator via e-mail. The Technical Advisor of the Tennis Club of Virginia Tech will always fill this position. That person will update the league rankings weekly, and make any necessary adjustments to the web-site such as contact updates, and photos.
-Rankings can be viewed by anyone on the league web-site.
-The top four teams in the league, according to the rankings, will compete in a tournament at the end of April.
-The tournament shall be at a location where there will be enough courts so two separate matches can go on at the same time.
-VA Tech has such a block of courts available. The USTA can help locate other public courts throughout the state, which can support such a request.
-Matches will begin at 10:00 a.m.
-Match format shall be as the format suggested above.
-Team #1 will play team #4. At the same time, team #2 will play team #3.
-The winning teams of both matches will play each other following a lunch break, or they will play the following day.
-The trophy will be awarded to the team that wins the second match.
-That team keeps the trophy until the following year, where they must bring along the trophy to the tournament.
-That team is required to have their school's name and year of the tournament engraved on the base.

AMENDMENTS-
Any changes to this contract must be brought up to the president of each tennis club in the league. A unanimous vote from the Presidents of each team must be made in order to make changes to this contract.
