YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT ON THE LABEL Those familiar terms you have seen
them on labels before, but what do they really mean?

    |
        NUTRIENT CLAIMS:What they really meant
 |
    | Cholesterol
Free : All plant-based foods are cholesterol-free. As
cholesterol is often associated with fat, you may think that the product
is fat free as well. In fact, cholesterol-free products may be high in fat
and even saturated fat, such as peanut butter. Reduced
fat : This means that the product contains less fat
compared to other products in the same range. But it does not mean that it
is a low-fat product. For example, a reduced fat margarine may still
contain up to 40 per cent fat. It should be consumed in moderate amounts.
In addition, some reduced fat products may be high in sugar and thus, not
      necessarily low in calories. 'Light'
or 'lite' products : This simply means 'low', and may
only mean that the product is low in a particular nutrient. For example,
potato chips that are labelled 'lite' may only mean that it is low in
sodium content. But it may still be in high in fat and calories. No
added sugar :This does not mean the food product is not
high in sugar. Dried fruits, like raisins, contain natural sugars, which
have the same calories as added sugar. And so, food products with no added
sugar might actually have more calories than products with sucrose added. Non-dairy
:This term may give people the impression that the product
is low in fat or saturated fat. But it simply means that the product is
not made from milk or milk products. For example, a non-dairy coffee
whitener can be made from glucose syrup and hydrogenated vegetable oil,
and can contain up to 55 grams of sugar and 35 grams of fat per 100 grams. | For more interesting articles regarding lifestyle, fitness, mental
