BETTAS IN VASES
The newest trend in animal exploitation!
The "cool adult gift" this holiday season were so-called betta vases. A commercial creation that ultimately doomed a whole lot of perfectly good siamese fighting fish. Promoted in several womens magazines and various garden centers across the country.
What's wrong with betta vases?? Nothing, as long as you keep in mind these few facts that were left out in the "Care instructions" handed out to consumers.
It is impossible to create a "natural system" requiring no filtration or water changes, especially in such a small container. And considering the fact that wild SFF would never come into contact with the majority of the plants used....
Because this is true, two points follow:

1. The water in the vase MUST be changed at least twice a week, preferably more. Use an aquarium safe dechlorinator added to room temperature tap water.

2. The betta MUST be fed a good quality betta food. SFF's are carnivores, meaning they eat other animals or meat products. They may pick at the plant, but they will not obtain much nutrition from it.

Finally, since SFF's get much of their oxygen from the atmosphere, be sure to leave a good gap between the plant and the vase, or your fish will slowly suffocate.

Keep these tips in mind for a happy, healthy Siamese Fighting Fish!
