When the War of Northern Aggression started he joined the Bedford Co. Militia. At some
later date his Company became part of the 10th Virginia Battallion, Company B. He was
then assigned to the 34 Virginia ?????, Company H. under Col. John Goode. He fought in
the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, Virginia and was wounded at Drewey's Bluff in
1864. In the final campaign he saw action at Sailors Creek and surrendered at Appomattox
Courthouse, Appomattox, Virginia on 09 April 1865 and returned to his home in the Otter
River District of Bedford, Virginia.

In 1880, towards the end of June, eight month old baby William died of "Flux" and a few
days later his mother, Matilda died of "Womb Diease". Her mother-in-law Catherine Hall
Burnett was there to care for her baby and children during their illness.
